YORK, PA – York College junior pitcher
Sam Koehl (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson)
twirled a five-inning no-hitter in the second game of the
Spartans' doubleheader sweep of Wesley College on Sunday in
York. The Spartans won game one 14-0 in five innings then rode
Koehl's no-hitter to a 10-0 win in the nightcap.
York improves to 21-7 overall and 7-1 in the CAC while the
Wolverines fall to 3-12 overall and 0-6 in the CAC.
In Koehl's no-hitter, just one Wolverine reached base as
Wesley third baseman Carmen Walsh had a swinging bunt that fell in
front of the plate with one out in the second inning. Spartan
catcher Julie Norris (Frederick, Md./Frederick)
popped out from behind the dish, collecting the ball cleanly but
her throw hit Walsh on the way down to first for an error. Walsh
was quickly erased three pitches later as Lacey Smith popped into a
double play.
The Spartan offense got all Koehl needed in the first as they
exploded for six runs in the frame. The Spartans sent 11 hitters to
the plate as they seized the early lead. York added two runs in the
second and two more in the fourth to invoke the five- inning mercy
rule.
Koehl struck out five and faced the minimum of 15 batters in the
game. She improves to 11-3 with the win. She was backed by very
solid Spartan defense in the game.
Lyndsey Ellsworth suffered the loss as she allowed eight runs on
nine hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in the loss.
She falls to 0-3 for the campaign. Megan Street came on in relief
and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk in her one inning of
action.
The Spartans' game two offense was led by Megan
Boyer (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) as she was 2-for-2 with four
RBI and a run scored. Megan Van Meter (Hanover,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) was 2-for-3 with two RBI while
Kristen Gray (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional)
was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Norris added two hits with two
runs scored while Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) contributed two hits, one run scored, and an
RBI.
Game one for the Spartans saw the Green and White offense get
three runs in the first and three more in the second before
exploding for eight third inning tallies.
The offense made life easy on starter Brittany Therres
(Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) as the freshman cruised
through her five innings of action. Therres improved to 10-4 as she
allowed two hits in her five innings of work. She struck out five
and walked just one.
Street was battered for 14 runs on 12 hits with four walks and
four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Ellsworth relieved Street
and did not allow a run with two walks in 1.2 innings of action.
The Spartan offense was powered by Heather Bormann
(Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) and Koehl. Bormann was
2-for-2 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Koehl was 2-for-3
with two RBI and two runs scored. She banged out her team-leading
sixth home run of the year with a solo blast in the third inning.
Smith was 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Norris was 2-for-2
with two RBI and a run scored. Therres helped her own cause with
two hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Nikki Barton had both of the Wolverines' game one hits as
she singled in the second and doubled in the fifth.
The Spartans put their five-game win streak on the line on
Thursday as they host Hood College in a Capital Athletic Conference
doubleheader. Game one from Spartan Stadium is set for 3:00 pm.
