SALISBURY, MD – Freshman pitcher
Brittany Therres (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone)
used her arm and her bat to help the York College softball team
advance to the next round of the Capital Athletic Conference
tournament as the Spartans eliminated Wesley College on Saturday
morning, 7-1. The Spartans advance to face the winner of the
Stevenson and Hood game on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
York improves to 26-11 with the win while Wesley falls to 7-18.
The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the first frame as
Kelly Smith (Riverdale, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
doubled to center. Smith advanced on a fly out and scored when
Therres doubled to center with two outs. Julie Norris
(Frederick, Md./Frederick) singled home Therres and then
scored when Michelle Barwick (Cockeysville,
Md./Dulaney) doubled to right center as the Spartans led
3-0 after one.
York added an unearned run in the fourth before the Wolverines
got their lone run courtesy of a Carmen Walsh home run in the top
of the sixth.
York put the game out of reach in the sixth as they responded
with three runs, pushing the lead to 7-1. Heather Bormann
(Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) singled in one of the runs in
the inning while the other two runs came courtesy of Wesley errors.
Therres earned the win as she allowed one run on three hits with
six strikeouts and no walks. She improves to 13-7 overall with the
victory.
Megan Street absorbed the loss as she allowed seven runs, five
earned, on nine this with four strikeouts and two walks. Street
falls to 5-10 with the loss.
Therres led the Spartans at the plate as she was 2-for-4 with
one RBI and one run scored. Centerfielder Karen Carr
(Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) added two hits and two runs
scored for York. Barwick chipped in with a hit and an RBI while
Bormann was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Norris was
1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Walsh paced the Wolverines with her solo home run while Lindsey
Ellsworth had a single and Nikki Barton had a double in the
three-hit Wesley attack.
The Spartans return to the diamond Saturday afternoon at 4:00
pm.
