CARLISLE, PA – The York College
men's lacrosse team dropped their second contest in a row
Wednesday afternoon as Dickinson topped the visiting Spartans 12-9.
The loss brings the Green and White's record to 2-4 on the
young season while the Red Devils improve to 4-2.
The Red Devils received three goals
from Ted Sirvaitis who paced the Dickinson offensive effort. The
home squad used a steady diet of three goals each period including
a 3-1 third period.
Junior attack Ryan McNicholas
(Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore attack Josh
Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) each scored three times for
the Spartans but it was not enough to vault the Spartans past their
Carlisle counterparts.
Following a first period that saw the Red
Devils own a 3-2 advantage, the Spartans responded in the second
with a 4-3 frame. McNicholas scored twice in the period while
Gamble and Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West
Islip) each tallied as the squads went into the halftime
break deadlocked at six.
Gamble added his third of the day to open
the third period as he gave the Spartans a 7-6 advantage. However,
three straight goals from the Red Devils in the third, including a
goal and assist from Chris Dodson, gave the home squad a 9-7
lead.
The fourth quarter would prove the same
story for the Red Devils as they notched three more tallies. The
Green and White only managed a pair in the frame, an early score
from Russell Tutt (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Parkville) and one midway through the period from
B.J. Blaker (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), as the
Dickinson defense held over the final 7:47 to secure the 12-9
victory.
For the game, Dickinson led in shots 47-37
while also holding the ground ball advantage 46-31. The home team
also won a majority of the face-offs winning 14-of-25.
Sirvaitis spread out each of his three
tallies with scores in the first, second, and fourth quarters.
Sirvaitis also added one assist for a game-high four points. Phil
Caputo, Casey Finkelstein, and Derek Still each scored twice.
Defensemen Chris Breslin, Al Golod, and Shea Licata each collected
five ground balls to lead the Red Devils. Goalkeeper Russell
Matthews secures the win for Dickinson between the pipes courtesy
of eleven wins over his 60 minutes.
McNicholas and Gamble led the Spartans as
each recorded a hat trick. Midfielder Mike LaRoque (Arnold,
Md./DeMatha) picked up a team-high five ground balls while
Zach Scherr (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) won
7-of-10 face-offs. Sophomore net minder Chris Collins
(Westminster, Md./Westminster) posted an impressive 21
saves to keep the Green and White close throughout the 60 minutes
of action.
The Spartans return home on Saturday,
March 21, as they host Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount.
The league contest is slated for 3:00 pm.
