YORK, PA - The York College women's swim team (1-1, 1-1
CAC) opened up their 2009 campaign with a Capital Athletic
Conference tri-meet victory over visiting Hood College (0-3, 0-2
CAC), 208-38 while taking a loss to perennial power the University
of Mary Washington Eagles (4-1, 3-0 CAC), 188-73. However, a bright
future for the Spartans began to illuminate with the emergence of
several young contributors.
The first showing of underclassmen charisma was issued by the
Green and White's Chelsea Ross (Paoli, Pa./PA
Cyber). Ross garnered a swift second place finish in the
1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:20.07 as the Spartan rookie
fell just short of UMW's Missy Kobiela.
The trend continued into the 200-yard freestyle when transfer
student, Heather MacLennan (Galena, Md./St.
Mark's) battled for a second place finish. MacLennan held
a good pace early riding off of the Eagles Sarah Crockett's hip
through the first 150 yards. Then off of the final turn the Spartan
sophomore turned on the heat but was out touched at the wall as
Crockett's 1:56.49 bested MacLennan by a mere four-tenths.
Kathy Murphy (Farmingdale, N.J./Colts Neck), a
Spartan sophomore, secured a third place showing in the 100 yard
backstroke where her strong walls kept her up to pace with two
Eagle swimmers. Murphy touched in at 1:05.22.
The Spartan youth movement continued in the 100 breaststroke.
Freshman Alex Minsky (Newton, Pa./Council Rock
North) pushed Mary Washington counterpart Megan DeSmit
throughout the first 70 yards, garnering a strong second place
finish with a time of 1:13.34.
Junior Lisa King (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton
Wright) and freshman Amanda Silcox (Lebanon,
Pa./Cedar Crest) garnered second and third-place finishes
for the Green and White, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. King
turned in a time of 2:23.48, which proved less than a second before
Silcox's 2:24.81.
Just before the meet's first intermission, Spartan senior
Ashley Stanton (Columbia, Md./Hammond) grabbed
second in the 50-yard freestyle. Stanton's dash through the
water resulted in a 26.45 time – two-hundredths ahead of
UMW's Chelsie Adams.
Picking up where she left off after a strong freshman campaign,
Michaela Guild (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
glided through the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 58.00. Finishing
just under 60 seconds provided Guild with second place in the
event.
One of the night's most exciting races came in the 200
backstroke as MacLennan and Crockett faced-off once again. Through
the first 100 yards, the pair were stroke-for-stroke, however
Crockett pulled ahead just slightly over the final 100 to secure
the victory. Crockett put in a time of 2:11.41 just ahead of
MacLennan's 2:11.66.
Minsky provided the home squad with another second-place
performance in the 200 breaststroke. The Spartan rookie swam her
way to a comfortable runner-up spot with a 2:40.61.
The 500-yard freestyle saw Kaitlin Crean (Fairfield,
Conn./Fairfield Warde) nab third for the Green and White
(5:45.61) while Silcox also came in third in the 100-yard butterfly
(1:04.45).
The Spartans captured third in both relays with times of 1:56.49
in the 200-yard medley and 3:52.55 in the 400 freestyle.
York makes a quick turnaround as the Spartans return to action
tomorrow, November 7, with a trip to CAC foe Marymount as the Green
and White look to avenge last year's 166-74 defeat. The
Spartans and Saints take to the pool at 2:00 p.m. in Arlington, Va.
