YORK, PA – On senior day at Graham Field, the York College
women's soccer team picked up a crucial 1-0 Capital Athletic
Conference victory over visiting Wesley College. With the win, the
Spartans remain in the running for the top overall seed heading
into next week's conference tournament.
The Spartans (13-4-1, 6-1-1 CAC) tallied the
game winner in the 55th minute. On the right side of the
field, senior Kaitlyn Harney (Stewartstown, Pa./York
Catholic) collected a pass from fellow senior Kat
Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) calmly settling the
ball at her feet and allowing York's attackers to run into
the box. Harney served the ball into the Wolverine box, but it was
initially caught by Wesley (6-10, 2-5 CAC) goalkeeper Sydney Kahan.
However, the slick conditions made the service difficult to handle
as the ball fell to the turf. Hard-working forward Erin
Mummert (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) proved in the
right place at the right time as she quickly poked in the loose
ball for her second goal of the year and more importantly the only
goal of the match.
The Spartans best chance aside from
Mummert's tally, came from the foot of Steph Mergler
(Street, Md./North Harford) in the 66th minute.
Mergler initially served a corner kick from the right side of the
field before swiftly sprinting into the Wolverine penalty area.
Again a Spartan proved in the right place at the right time as a
loose ball popped to Mergler's foot. The left-footed forward
struck a rocket toward Wesley's near post. In a display of
quick reflexes, Kahan knocked away the rifled attempt keeping the
score at 1-0.
Despite several nervous minutes for the Green
and White late in the match as the Wolverines pushed for the tying
score, the Spartans were able to finish off the 90 minutes with the
clean sheet and collect their sixth conference win of the season.
For the game, York led their guests 12-5 in
shots as the Spartans did not allow a single shot on-goal. The
hosts also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel
(Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) picks up the victory
manning the pipes for the game's first 76:46. Desiree
Halaka (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) relieved Sparnarkel
in the 77th minute, finishing the final 13:14 and the
shutout. Kahan takes the loss despite making seven stops for the
Wolverines.
Prior to the match, the Spartans recognized
their five seniors. Torode, Harney, Meghan Rowland (Glen
Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Lauren Stewart
(West River, Md./Southern), and Jackie Moser
(Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) have been apart of some of
the best four years of Spartan soccer. Over the past four seasons,
the Green and White have accumulated a 53-21-8 record, including a
stellar 23-6-1 in conference play. In 2007, this class helped the
Spartans to their first CAC tournament title and a berth into the
NCAA tournament where they reached the Sweet 16.
The Spartans complete their 2009 regular
season slate on Wednesday, October 28. York travels to Moravian for
a 3:30 pm non-conference tilt.
