YORK, PA - The York College men's soccer team
struck for six scores against visiting Marymount on Tuesday evening
at York's Graham Field, as the green and white came away with the
6-0 victory. The Capital Athletic Conference contest, shortened by
weather and darkness, moves the Spartans to 10-0 on the year while
Marymount falls to 3-6-2.
The Spartans lit up the scoreboard early as central defender
Scott Becker (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) tallied
his second goal of the season. Just before the game's fifth
minute, senior Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll
School) played a short corner kick to junior Jon
Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) who promptly played it
back to his brother on the endline. The elder Ports then swung in a
gorgeous cross that found the head of Brian Carr
(Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional), which
unfortunately clanged off the crossbar. An opportunistic
Aaron Good (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area)
collected the ensuing rebound and struck it back across the
goalmouth where Becker headed home the game's first
tally.
From there the Spartans were off and running. After a Marymount
foul just outside their 18-yard box, sophomore Lucas Emil
(Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) curled a beautiful free
kick around the Saint wall and tucked it neatly in the back of the
Marymount net. Emil's second notch of the year brought the
score to 2-0 Spartans in the tenth minute of play.
The green and white would strike for a third time just 12:37 into
the match on a combination from the Ports brothers. Jon Ports laid
a great through-ball to the feet of Chris Ports who slotted his
third tally of the year just inside the far right post.
York's scoring would quiet down until the beginning of the
second frame when Good would add another assist to the stat sheet,
this time connecting with Jon Ports. Good artfully back-heeled a
short pass to Ports inside Marymount's penalty area, where
the junior quickly put York up 4-0.
The match's final two scores would come from the foot of
junior Justin Suchoski (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy).
In the 51st minute, Suchoski tallied on a Jon Ports assist and
then, just seconds later, Suchoski scored again on a solid
individual effort.
With just over 32 minutes remaining in the match, lightning was
spotted and the game was suspended for over an hour. After play
resumed and the necessary 70 minutes of regulation had elapsed, the
referee called the game due to darkness with 14:43 remaining.
York controlled much of the play throughout the game, holding a
16-7 bulge in shots. However, Marymount did own a 2-1 edge in
corner kick opportunities.
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Brooten (Gladstone,
N.J./Bernards) secured his first collegiate win in his
first start for the Spartan side. Brooten made a pair of saves in
his 54:37 of work. Kyle Marks (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) and Kyle Connolly (Stratham,
N.H./Exeter) finished out the game for the green and white
with neither recording a stop. Stephen Mapp registered two saves
also playing 54:37 before William Brahmstedt came on for the
match's final 20:40.
York makes a quick turnaround as they travel to CAC foe Gallaudet
tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1. Game time from Washington, D.C. is
slated for 4:00 pm.
