YORK, PA-Sophomore
Katie Dawkins (Easton, Md./Easton) tallied two
goals and an assist to lead the York College field hockey squad to
a 5-1 victory over Albright College on a rainy Friday afternoon in
York. The game proved to be a successful start to the tenure of the
Spartans' new head coach Jamie Swartz who is in her first
season as the Spartans' head coach. Swartz was a four-year
All-Capital Athletic Conference player in the late
1990's and also was a two-year assistant coach for the green
and white after graduation.
The Spartans are 1-0 with the win while the Lions fall to
0-1 with the loss.
The green and white got on the board first as
junior Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon
County) received a pass from Dawkins and ripped a shot
past Lion keeper Kaitlyn Johnstone for the season's opening
tally. That goal came with 5:57 remaining before the half. Dawkins
pushed the lead to 2-0 just 3:47 later as she recorded an
unassisted goal, poking home a rebound for a goal.
The Spartans carried a majority of the first
half play, outshooting Albright 8-2 in the stanza.
The Lions came out and took the play to the
green and white to open the second half. The Lions converted that
momentum into a goal when Lindsay Neal collected a pass at the top
of the circle and fired a shot on cage. That shot was tipped home
for the goal by Gia Boscola with 17:45 left in regulation.
The green and white collected themselves and
answered with Dawkins' second goal of the game as freshman
Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township)
flicked the ball in the circle where Dawkins one-timed the ball
into the right corner of the cage for the 3-1 York lead.
The Spartan offense received a fourth goal
just six minutes later as sophomore Casey Lawrence
(Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic) captured a loose ball
and deposited the sphere into the cage with 1:31 remaining in the
game. York closed out the scoring on a corner with no time left on
the clock as Lawrence fed Roush for the goal. The five goals
matches their highest offensive output of the 2007 season as York
defeated Villa Julie 5-0 on September 27, 2007.
The Spartans finished the game holding a 13-7
edge in shots while both teams had six penalty corners.
Spartan netminder Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) recorded four saves in
earning the win while Johnstone made seven stops while she allowed
all five Spartan goals.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday,
September 3 when they host Gettysburg in a non-conference contest.
Game time is set for 4:30 pm at Kinsley Field.
