WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior midfielder
Chris Chappelle (Stevensville, Md./Chesapeake)
vaulted the York College men's lacrosse team to an
exhilarating 10-9 eight-overtime victory over Catholic University
Tuesday afternoon in the Spartans final game of the 2008 season.
The green and white end their year with a 10-7 record (3-4 CAC)
while the Cardinals fall to 6-9 (1-4 Landmark).
Chappelle capped off his stellar career with the game-winning
score with 2:19 to play in the contest's eighth overtime.
Chappelle produced a brilliant final outing as he notched a hat
trick to close out his senior year with 15 goals.
The Spartans never led during the contest and only managed two
ties until Chappelle's final score. Ryan McNicholas
(Fallston, Md./Fallston) pushed the game into overtime
when he notched the tying score at nine all with only 34 seconds
left in the contest. McNicholas' goal, which was assisted by
freshman standout Kalen Roundy (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana), was the fourth unanswered score the Spartans
notched over the game's final 7:08. The sophomore's
team-best 27th goal of the year sent his squad into their first
overtime game of the season.
Prior to Chappelle's overtime heroics, the Spartans found
themselves down 9-5 with only 10:04 remaining on the game clock.
Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) cut the
Cardinal lead to three with his eighth tally of the year at the
7:08 mark. Merely 25 seconds after Schab's score,
Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) combined with
Kyle Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) for
Henninger's 23rd goal of his senior campaign. The Spartans
had now cut the lead from a distant four goals to a manageable
two.
With 4:30 showing on the clock, Steve Roy (Feasterville,
Pa./Archbishop Wood) slotted home the Spartans'
eighth score of the afternoon. With the score now standing at 9-8
in favor of the home squad, the York offense pushed for the tying
score, which came off McNicholas' crosse with only 34 seconds
remaining.
At the beginning of the contest, Catholic jumped out to a 3-0 lead
in the game's opening frame. Gamble and Chappelle would each
score before the end of the period, but the Cardinals still led
3-2.
The squads would trade score lines during the second 15 minutes,
as York notched a trio of scores while Catholic was only able to
net two goals. Schab, Roy, and Chappelle lit up the scoreboard for
the Spartans in the second frame, as the game was tied 5-5 heading
into the halftime break.
Catholic would explode for the game's next four goals
scoring twice in the third and twice in the fourth to grab a 9-5
advantage before the Spartans came roaring back.
York led in shots 47-39 while the Cardinals took a slight
advantage in ground balls 39-38. The Spartans won 14 of the 25
face-offs and were solid in defending during Catholic's extra-man
opportunities, only allowing four scores in eleven attempts.
On the day, Chappelle's three scores paced the Spartans
offensively as Roy and Schab each added a pair of tallies.
McNicholas, Gamble, and Henninger each added one goal. Five
Spartans recorded assists as Gamble, Henninger, Roundy,
Mike Stokes (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), and
Mike LaRoque (Arnold, Md./DeMatha) each chipped in
with one helper. Stokes and LaRoque each nabbed seven ground balls
in the winning effort.
Jimmy Sinnott led the way for the Cardinals as he netted a trio
of goals. Kyle Brant recorded two scores while four other Cardinals
each added one goal. Mike DiGiesi distributed three assists for the
the Cardinals. Four players registered five ground balls for the
Catholic side.
Chris Collins (Westminster, Md./Westminster)
earns his first collegiate win recording 11 saves after coming in
late in the game. Greg Kavazanjian takes the loss in net for the
Cardinals as he went the distance making 15 stops.
With the season's final score in the books, the Spartans
bid adieu to their ten seniors: Henninger, Chappelle, Roy,
Stokes,Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley),
Rob Marine (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), Joe
Kenworthy (York, Pa./Severna Park), Nick Carlson
(Fallston, Md./Fallston), Sean O'Hara
(Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic), and student-assistant
Colin O'Neill (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan). This group amassed a 31-27 record over their
four seasons, by far the best mark over any four-year stretch in
the history of the program.
