YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team
notched an important 8-5 non-conference victory at Messiah College
on Wednesday afternoon in Grantham, PA. The Spartans, winners of
two straight, improve to 3-1 overall while the Falcons fall to 0-3
for the campaign.
The Spartans jumped on the board early as they struck for three
first period goals. Ryan McNicholas (Fallston,
Md./Fallston) tallied the Spartans' first goal as he
notched a man-advantage goal just 2:03 into the game. Sophomore
Ryan Schab (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) put the
green and white up 2-0 with an unassisted goal with 8:52 remaining
in the first. McNicholas got his second goal of the game off a
Schab pass with just 33 ticks remaining in the quarter.
The Falcons cut into the Spartan lead with two goals to start
the second quarter. York pushed the lead back to 4-2 when
Rob Marine (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) picked up an
unassisted goal with 5:58 left in the first half. The Falcons
responded with two goals in 17 seconds to tie the game at four
which would be the score at the break.
Each team got a third period goal as senior Kyle
Henninger (Millers, Md./Hereford) got York's tally
at the 8:37 mark of the quarter.
The Spartans got the game-winning goal from Marine as he
recorded another unassisted goal with 9:08 remaining in regulation.
McNicholas got his third goal of the game with 4:23 left and
Chris Norman (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) closed out
the scoring with a tally with 1:48 remaining in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Keeler (Morton,
Pa./Ridley) earned the win as he registered 13 stops in
his 60 minutes of action. He improves to 3-1 with the victory. Ted
Oberg made 20 saves in the losing effort as he allowed all eight of
the Spartan goals in his 60 minutes of action.
The Spartan offense was paced by McNicholas as he notched three
goals for the green and white. Marine added two goals including the
game-winner. Schab added a goal and an assist as York's third
multi-point scorer.
Messiah had five different players record goals while two
players added assists.
York finished the game holding a 48-38 edge in shots while
Messiah held a 32-26 advantage in ground balls. Messiah won
12-of-17 face offs for the game while both teams had a
man-advantage goals.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday to host Richard
Stockton in a non-conference contest. Game time in York is set for
1:00 pm in York.
