ARLINGTON, VA – The York College men's lacrosse team
snapped their two game losing streak with a 9-7 Capital Athletic
Conference win over Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in
Arlington, VA. The Spartans improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the
CAC while the Saints fall to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in the
conference.
The Spartans kicked off the scoring with a Chris
Chappelle (Stevensville, Md./Chesapeake) goal 2:29 into
the game. York pushed the lead to 2-0 with a Chris Norman
(Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) goal just over a 1:15 later.
The Saints cut into their deficit with a Chris Wascak goal with
7:58 remaining in the first quarter. Ryan McNicholas
(Fallston, Md./Fallston) pushed the Spartan lead to 3-1
with a goal at the 6:25 mark but Marymount answered that goal with
a Kevin Conklin tally just 3:08 before the end of the quarter.
The Spartans had the only two goals of the second period,
pushing their lead to 5-2. Senior Kyle Henninger (Millers,
Md./Hereford) scored with 2:12 left before the half while
Chappelle recorded his second goal of the game, striking for an
unassisted goal just 1:43 prior to intermission.
The Saints went on a three-goal spurt midway through the third
quarter as the game was tied at five by a Conklin goal with 4:11
left in the third. Henninger put the Spartans back on top with a
goal off a pass from Rob Marine (Bel Air, Md./Bel
Air) with 1:37 left in the stanza.
The momentum of Henninger's goal carried over into the
start of the fourth quarter as Josh Gamble (Easton,
Md./Easton) scored 59 seconds into the final period. The
Spartans held that 7-5 lead until McNicholas pushed the advantage
to 8-5 with a goal with 4:07 left in regulation. Henniger notched
his third and final goal of the game with 1:26 left, providing York
with the 9-5 edge. Marymount got a pair of man advantage goals in
the final 44 seconds to provide for the Spartans' final
margin of victory.
York was paced by Henninger as the senior had five points on
three goals and two assist. Henninger also had four ground balls
for the green and white. McNicholas added three points on a pair of
goals and one assist while Chappelle was the third Spartan with
multiple points as he had two goals.
Chris Wascak led the Saints with five points on three goals and
two assists while Conklin notched a pair of goals for the hosts.
Danny Carson and Colin Stuart each added single goals for the
Saints.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Keeler (Morton,
Pa./Ridley) earned the win in net for the Spartans as he
recorded 13 saves in his 60 minutes of work. Alex Hammer took the
loss for the Saints as he registered 14 stops for Marymount.
The Saints held advantages in most statistical categories as
they outshot the Spartans 45-29 in addition to holding a 35-31 edge
in ground balls. Both teams won 9 of the 18 face offs while
Marymount had 24 turnovers to 21 for the green and white. The
Spartans were penalized 14 times for a total of 10:30 while the
Saints were whistled for just four infractions for a total of 3:30.
Marymount was only able to capitalize on three of their 13 extra
man opportunities. York was 0-for-4 in the man advantage for the
game.
The Spartans remain on the road as they face #1 Salisbury
University on Tuesday evening. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm
start in Salisbury, MD.
