YORK, PA – The York College men's lacrosse team
suffered a tough 10-8 loss to #17 Dickinson College on a gray and
brisk Wednesday evening at York's Kinsley Field. The Spartans
fall to 5-3 on the season while Dickinson improves to
5-1.
Steve Roy (Feasterville, Pa./Archbishop Wood)
opened the scoring for the Spartan side tallying the game's
first goal 1:27 into the contest. After a Dickinson tied the early
score at one goal apiece, Roy notched his second of game to put the
green and white back in front at the 9:47 mark. Merely 25 seconds
later, the Red Devils' Jon Schneider evened the score once
again, now at 2-2. With 3:54 to play in the quarter, John
Gaeta's (Bel Air, Md./Archbishop Curley) seventh
goal of the season put the home squad on top 3-2. Almost
repeating the sequence from six minutes earlier, Dickinson brought
the score level once again just 25 seconds after Gaeta's
score, with a Ted Sirvaitis goal from Bennett Alberston's
assist.
The second period belonged to Dickinson as the Red Devils
notched a trio of scores while the Spartans could only manage one
tally. Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston)
did open the second frame with a goal at the 12:18 mark to put York
ahead by one at 4-3. Then the visitors rattled off three unanswered
scores in the stanza. Sirvaitis capped the half's scoring
with his second goal of the game with 2:50 showing on the clock.
After the first 30 minutes of action, Dickinson led 6-4.
York would battle after the halftime break but was simply unable
to overcome the Red Devil lead. Dickinson would strike first in the
third quarter on a Derek Still score to go up 7-4. The sides traded
goals throughout the rest of the frame as McNicholas and
Chris Chappelle (Stevensville, Md./Chesapeake)
both notched tallies while Still tallied another in-between the
Spartan scores. Dickinson would take the 8-6 lead into the final
frame.
The fourth quarter was much the same story as the sides
continued to trade goals. Ryan Schab's (West Islip,
N.Y./West Islip) early fourth stanza tally brought the
green and white to within one at 8-7 with 12:54 remaining in the
game. The tough Sirvaitis however, gave the Red Devils the two-goal
advantage once again at 11:18 mark.
With only 8:36 left to play, Kalen Roundy (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) finished York's eighth goal of the
contest to bring the score to 9-8. Dickinson answered 1:13 later
when Still tallied his fourth and final goal of the contest and
give the game's final 10-8 result.
For the contest, the Spartans owned a strong 33-22 advantage in
shots while also owning a 29-27 edge ground balls. The Red Devils
earned wins in 13-of-22 face-offs with much credit due to Pat
Curley, Dickinson's face-off specialist. Curley dominated in
the early face-offs as his efforts helped the Red Devils win
10-of-12 in the first half.
Roy netted a hat trick for the Spartan side as he boosts his
season total to ten scores. McNicholas also scored multiple times
tallying two goals. Kyle Henninger (Millers,
Md./Hereford) notched two assists while Chappelle added
one helper. Zach Scherr (Reisterstown,
Md./Franklin) played a fantastic contest, specializing in
face-offs against Curley. The sophomore disrupted Curley's
early momentum and earned eight of York's nine face-off
victories and won five of the game's final six attempts.
Rob Marine (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) also posted a
strong contest for the green and white registering five ground
balls and four caused turnovers.
Still was the game's high scorer with four goals on the
day while Sirvaitis scored a hat trick of his own to go along with
one assist. Chris Dodson added two assists for the Red Devils.
Curley picked up a game-high eight ground balls with a majority of
those coming from face-off victories.
Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) takes
the loss in the Spartan net making ten saves in his 60 minutes of
work. Russell Matthews earns his fifth win of the season as he made
eleven stops for the Red Devils.
The Spartans return to action this Saturday, March 22, as they
travel to Marymount for a 1:00 pm tilt.
