DOVER, DE - The York College men's
lacrosse team had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 9-8
Capital Athletic Conference loss at Wesley College. The Spartans
fall to 5-2 on the season including 1-1 in league play. Wesley
improves to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the CAC.
Wesley's Brian Bivins scored the game-winner with 14
seconds left in the game to give his squad the valuable CAC
victory. Bivins' goal capped a 6-1 second half run for the
Wolverines.
With the Spartans leading 7-3 after the game's first 30
minutes, Wesley came out an inspired bunch in the second half and
fought all the way back to earn the win.
To open the game, the Wolverines jumped out to an early 1-0 lead
as Kirk Waldie found Brad Smith a mere 30 seconds into the contest.
Surprised, but not rattled by Wesley's quick strike, the
Spartans promptly answered on a Brian O'Neill
(Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) score 39 seconds after
Smith's tally. Kyle Henninger (Millers,
Md./Hereford) then gave York the lead with 10:28 to go in
the first frame. York would go on to notch five unanswered goals in
the opening period to go into the second quarter holding a 5-1
advantage.
Dan Skeels would cut the Spartan lead to 5-2 with his score at
the 12:05 mark in the second stanza. Spartan senior Steve
Roy (Feasterville, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied with 7:26
remaining before Henninger followed with his second of the contest
to up the lead to 7-2. Skeels added another score for the
Wolverines before the halftime whistle as the squads went into the
break with the Spartans leading 7-3.
The third frame was nearly all Wesley as the Wolverines tallied
three scores in the frame, all within a one minute period. After a
Spartan penalty resulted in a man-up opportunity for the home
squad, Eric Crumbock capitalized with a goal at the 7:21 mark.
Crumbock etched his name in the scorebook again with 6:35 to play
in the period to bring the score to 7-5 Spartans. Exactly one
minute after Crumbock's first tally and just 14 seconds after
his second, Skeels completed the 3-0 run with another man-up goal
at 6:21. The Spartan lead had suddenly gone from four to one, all
within 60 seconds.
Henninger put an end to the Wolverine spurt with his third goal
of the contest with 2:44 remaining in the quarter. The
senior's team-leading sixteenth goal of the year made the
stanza a little easier to stomach for the visitors but Wesley had
still gained significant momentum as the fourth quarter would
commence with the Spartans owning a slight 8-6 lead.
Luke Moeller brought the Wolverines to within one at 8-7 as he
tallied just 27 seconds into the fourth. Wesley would keep the
pressure on the Spartans and tie the game at 8-8. Waldie's
goal with 9:05 to go evened the score for the first time since the
the 10:29 mark in the first quarter.
As both sides pressed for the victory during the final nine
minutes it was Wesley who came out on top with Bivins' late
score.
For the game, the Spartans held a slight edge in shots at 36-34,
while Wesley owned the ground ball advantage picking up 26 to
York's 22.
Henninger was the Spartans' leading scorer tallying three
goals on the day as he also dished out one assist. Five other
Spartans each had one score. Chris Chappelle (Stevensville,
Md./Chesapeake) earned his three assists on each of
Henninger's tallies, while Chris Norman (Annapolis,
Md./Broadneck) added a pair of helpers.
Skeels recorded a hat trick for the Wolverines as Crumbock
chipped in with two scores and one assist. Waldie also had a solid
day for the home squad notching one goal, one assist, and a
game-high six ground balls.
Matt Keeler (Morton, Pa./Ridley) takes the loss
for the Spartans making 13 saves over his 60 minutes while Jim
McCleaft earns the victory between the Wesley pipes as he made 15
stops.
The Spartans return home on Tuesday, March 18, to host Dickinson
at 3:30 pm.
