YORK, PA – The York College men's
soccer team added yet another tally to the win column on Saturday
afternoon, posting a 5-0 score over visiting Greensboro College.
The Spartans record now stands at 12-0 while the Pride fall to
6-4-1 in 2008.
York controlled play throughout the match, which included racing
out to a two-goal lead within the first six minutes of play. Senior
midfielder Chris Ports (Baltimore, Md./John
Carroll) gave York the 1-0 advantage just 3:37 into the
match. Greensboro goalkeeper Kurt Gardiner misplayed a ball just
outside his own 18-yard box, allowing the ball to get behind him.
An alert Ports jumped on the loose ball for an easy finish, mere
yards off the Greensboro goal line.
Freshman standout Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg,
Pa./Warwick) put the York side up by two just 88 seconds
after Ports' score. Aaron Good (Elizabethtown,
Pa./Elizabethtown Area) played a great through-ball to
Nuspahic who collected just outside the Pride's penalty box,
dribbled around an on-rushing Gardiner and slotted home his eighth
notch of 2008.
Finding themselves up a quick 2-0, the Spartans continued to
pressure the Greensboro side. The pressure would pay off in the
23rd minute in the form of a third Spartan tally. Sophomore
Lucas Emil (Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic)
slipped a fantastic pass to All-American Jon Ports
(Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) who promptly added another tally
to the scoreboard, his eighth of the season.
York would take the 3-0 margin into the halftime break. The green
and white owned a strong 10-2 advantage in shots and a 5-0 lead in
corners.
In the 48th-minute, Jon Ports returned the favor to Emil. Ports
played a through-ball to the sophomore who ran onto the pass,
feigned the remainder of the Greensboro defense and scored his
third of the season.
York's scoring would finish how it started, as Chris Ports
tallied the Spartan's fifth and final goal of the day in the
game's 53rd minute. Ports collected the ball just outside the
Greensboro six-yard line, dribbled across the face of the goal to
beat several defenders, and finished the fifth goal of his senior
campaign.
For the match, the Spartans held a commanding 19-8 lead in shots
and an 8-0 bulge in corners.
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Marks (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) picked-up his tenth win of the season, as
he was not forced to make a save in his 45 minutes of work. Junior
Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) replaced
Marks at the beginning of the second frame and recorded
York's only save of the match. Freshman Kyle Connolly
(Stratham, N.H./Exeter) finished off the clean sheet for
the Spartans, playing the game's final eleven minutes. The
Pride's Kurt Gardiner registered all five of
Greensboro's saves in his 71:40 of action. Patrick Mckeon
came on for the final 18:20 and did not record a stop.
York will next travel to Grantham, Pa. on Wednesday, October 8, to
face Messiah College. The #3 Spartans will go toe-to-toe with the
#2 Falcons in a clash of two of the top teams in Division III. The
match is slated for 7:00 pm.
