CAMDEN, N.J. – The York College
men's soccer team remained perfect with a 2-0 win at a
talented Rutgers-Camden squad on Saturday afternoon at the Scarlet
Raptors homecoming game. The Spartans improve to 14-0 overall while
Rutgers-Camden falls to 10-3-1 for the campaign. The game was a
prime opportunity to have a let down after York captured a big 2-1
win over #2 ranked Messiah on Wednesday night but the third-ranked
Spartans stayed focused and put together another workmanlike effort
that has become their trademark.
The Spartans controlled play throughout the
opening minutes of the contest. The green and white got on the
board in the 22nd minute as Lucas Emil
(Parsippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Aaron Good
(Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) combined to create
a play for freshman Kemal Nuspahic (East Petersburg,
Pa./Warwick). Emil fed the ball to Good who delivered the
ball down the middle of the field where Nuspahic finished off the
chance, beating Scarlet Raptor goalkeeper Tim VanLiew for the
game's opening tally. The goal was Nuspahic's
team-leading ninth of the campaign.
The Spartans would not score the remainder of
the first half despite holding a significant 15-2 edge in total
shots and a 6-0 bulge in shots on goal. York also had four corner
kicks while the Scarlet Raptors did not manage to record a corner
in the half.
The Spartans got their
second goal midway through the second half as Emil took a direct
kick at the top of the box. He drilled the shot inside the left
post for the goal, his fourth of the year.
The Spartans finished the game with a big
24-10 bulge in total shots as the Raptors did well to finish the
match allowing just two goals. York also held a 5-3 edge in corner
kicks for the match. The Raptors committed 17 fouls to just five
for York while Rutgers-Camden was booked with three yellow cards to
just one for the green and white.
Kyle Marks (Yardley,
Pa./Pennsbury) was again stellar in goal as the senior
recorded the clean sheet. He recorded two saves as he posted his
23rd career shutout. The shutout is the Spartans'
11th this year and is one of the major reasons York is
ranked as the top defense in the country according to the latest
NCAA Division III statistical rankings. Marks is ranked number one
in the nation for save percentage as the senior continues to have a
strong senior year. VanLiew made six saves as he suffered the loss
for Rutgers-Camden.
The Spartans now get a much deserved week off
until they return to action next Saturday when they host the
25th ranked University of Mary Washington Eagles on
Senior Day in York. Game time at Graham Field is set for 2:00
pm.
