NEWPORT NEWS, VA-Three minutes and 44 seconds. That is
all the time the York College men's soccer team would need to
tally a trio of goals in their 3-0 win Saturday over The College of
New Jersey. Completing the two game sweep at the Joe Pombriant/CNU
Classic at Christopher Newport University, the green and white
increased their unbeaten streak to 44 consecutive games. The
Spartan record climbs to 4-0 while TCNJ receives their first loss
of the season (4-1).
After a scoreless first half of play, the Spartans owned a
slight 6-5 advantage in shots as both teams battled to break
through first.
The Spartans flurry of goals
came between the 52:16 and 56:00 minute marks of the second stanza.
Kurt Lane
(Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) put the green and white on the
board as he combined with Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh).
Lane's first goal of the 2007 campaign gave the Spartans a
1-0 lead.
Seeing how Lane enjoyed his
tally, Ports decided to notch one of his own in the 56th minute.
Andrew
Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) fed Ports who promptly
extended the Spartan lead to two. The goal was Ports' third
in four games.
Fourteen seconds later, York added to the scoreboard when
Wheeler finished his attempt on goal. The All-American collected
the ball and netted his team-leading sixth tally of the year.
Wheeler's goal would prove to be the last time either side
would find the back of the net

in the second period. The two teams drew even in corner kicks at
five apiece.
