YORK, PA-The York College men's
lacrosse team ended their four-game losing skid with an exciting
9-7 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount University
on Saturday afternoon at a very cold and windy Kinsley Field. The
Spartans improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the league while the
Saints fall to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The Spartans jumped on the Saints early as
Brendan Hopkins (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) opened the scoring with an
unassisted goal just 1:08 into the game. The Saints tied the game
just over a minute and a half later with a Brandon Nemes unassisted
goal.
York then tallied five unanswered goals capped
by Kyle Henninger's (Millers, MD/Hereford) man advantage goal
with 3:47 remaining in the first. Marymount's DJ Tayman
scored the final goal of the period as York led 6-2 after one.
The Saints scored the only two goals of the
second period as Kevin Conklin and Alex Curley scored for
Marymount.
With light snow flurries starting to fly in the
opening moments of the third period, Hopkins began the second half
scoring with a goal 1:19 into the second half. Henninger tallied
his third goal of the game with 8:28 remaining in the third.
Freshman Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, MD/Fallston) then pushed the
York lead to 9-4 with an unassisted goal with 5:38 left in the
fourth.
The Saints cut the lead to 9-5 with a Curley
goal and then struck for a man-down goal by Colin Malone with 52
seconds left in the third, drawing the Saints to within three at
9-6.
The fourth quarter was full of action but
limited in scoring as the Saints' Nick Shay tallied the only
goal of the stanza. Marymount had three shots in the final 30
seconds of regulation but Spartan goalie Matt Keeler (Morton,
PA/Ridley) turned them away to preserve the win.
Hopkins led the Spartans with four goals while
Henninger chipped in with three scores of his own. Paul Rudell
(Lusby, MD/Patuxent) handed out three assists while McNicholas
added a goal and an assist. Junior captain Chris Chappelle
(Stevensville, MD/Chesapeake) tallied one goal and one assist while
he also had nine ground balls and won 9-of-15 face offs.
Curley scored twice for the Saints while
Tayman, Shay, Nemes, and Malone each scored single goals for
Marymount. Wes Huppenthal had two ground balls and won seven of his
10 face offs for the game.
Keeler earned the win as he notched nine saves
as he went the distance and allowed the seven Marymount goals. He
improves to 3-6 for the campaign. Saint keeper Alex Hammer allowed
nine goals and made nine saves for Marymount.
The Spartans finished the game holding a 32-24
edge in shots and a 46-33 margin in ground balls. The teams split
their 20 face offs and combined for 52 turnovers for the game. York
scored one goal in their four man advantage opportunities while
Marymount was 0-for-4. The Saints did tally a man-down goal in the
game.
York returns to action on Tuesday as they
travel to Goucher to face the Gophers in a make-up contest. Game
