FREDERICK, MD-The York College men's
lacrosse team put together the highest offensive output since April
25, 2004 as they defeated Hood College 19-4 in Capital Athletic
Conference action on Tuesday in Frederick, MD. The 19-goal
offensive explosion is the highest total since the 21 goals York
put up against Cazenovia College in the season finale of the 2004
season.
York improves to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the CAC
while the Blazers fall to 0-14 overall and 0-7 in the CAC.
The Blazers opened the scoring with a Will
Oconis goal just 1:39 into the game. The Spartans responded by
scoring the remaining four goals of the first period including a
pair from senior Adam Cross (Westminster, MD/Westminster).
York continued the offensive onslaught with two
goals to open the second before the Blazers' Sofiane Lazar
scored at the 9:37 mark of the second, cutting the Spartan lead to
6-2. York answered with three goals to close out the half as the
green and white led 9-2 at the break.
The Spartans blew the game wide open in the
third period as York scored the first five goals of the period to
take a 14-2 lead with just over a minute left in the stanza. Both
teams scored in the final minute of the third as York led 15-3 at
the end of the third.
York closed out the game by outscoring the
Blazers 4-1 in the final period to provide for the final margin of
victory.
Cross led the Spartans with six points on five
goals and one assist while he also had three ground balls. Junior
Kyle Henninger (Millers, MD/Hereford) and senior Brendan Hopkins
(Monrovia, MD/Urbana) each added four points for York. Henninger
scored four goals while Hopkins had a pair of goals and a pair of
assists. Freshman Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, MD/Fallston) also had
four points on two goals and two assists while Mike Klingerman
(Chadds Ford, PA/Ridley) handed out a game-high three assists for
YCP. Freshman Brandon Echard (Dunkirk, MD/Southern) scored his
first two career goals for the Spartans while Ryan Schab (West
Islip, NY/West Islip) added a goal and an assist.
Oconis led the Blazers with three goals while
Lazar scored the other for Hood. Blake Rust and Jeff Balinsky
handed out assists for Hood.
Senior Matt Hanson (Marriottsville, MD/River
Hill) earned the win in goal for the Spartans as he made nine saves
for York. He improves to 1-0 for the year. Sam Hofmann recorded 19
saves for the Blazers as he went the distance in net for Hood.
The Spartans finished the game out-shooting the
hosts 59-13 while the green and white had a 55-20 bulge in ground
balls. The green and white won 20-of-25 face offs while they forced
the Blazers into 26 turnovers for the game.
The green and white return to action on Thursday
when they travel to Goucher College to face the Gophers in a
make-up CAC contest. Game time in Towson is set for 4:00 pm.
