Washington & Lee Shuts Down Spartan Offense

    LEXINGTON, VA-The York College men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-3 decision at #18 Washington & Lee on Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, VA. The Spartans and Generals are now both 1-1 for the campaign.
    The Generals jumped all over the Spartans in the first quarter, outscoring the green and white 3-0 in the frame. Seth Fishman scored his first goal at the 11:27 mark and then notched a man-advantage goal with 6:42 remaining in the first. Washington & Lee increased the lead to 7-0 late into the second before the Spartans' Paul Rudell (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) got the green and white on the board with his first goal of the year with 31 seconds before the half. The Spartans then allowed a Spotty Robins goals just seven seconds after Rudell's goal to give the Generals the momentum, and an 8-1 lead heading to the break.
    York got the only goal of the third quarter as Rudell tallied his second goal of the game with 2:41 remaining in the quarter.
    Fishman scored his third goal of the game early in the fourth quarter before Brendan Hopkins (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) closed out the scoring with a cosmetic goal with one second left in the game.
    Fishman led the Generals with the three goals while Jim Ryan added two goals and one assist. Ned Rider and Harry St. John each added one goal and one assist to the W&L attack.
    Rudell scored two of York's goals while Hopkins added the other. Junior Pat Van Middelem (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had York's lone assist in the game. Steve Mersinger (Westminster, MD/Westminster) collected a team-high seven ground balls for the Spartans.
    Chris Lalli earned the win in goal for the Generals as he made 14 saves and allowed just two goals in 57:25 of action. Alex Heaton played 2:35 in relief and allowed the Spartans' final goal. Spartan keeper Matt Keeler (Morton, PA/Ridley) made five saves and allowed nine goals as he played all 60:00 minutes. Keeler added five ground balls for the Spartans.
    The Generals edged the Spartans in totals shots 30-29 while York held a 41-32 advantage in ground balls. The Generals won eight of the 14 face offs in the game. W&L was successful in 20-of-29 clears while York was 17-for-26 for the game. Washington & Lee was 1-for-4 in man advantage while York was 0-for-4.
    The Spartans return to action this Saturday when they travel to Widener University for a non-conference contest. Game time in Chester is set for 1:00 pm.
