YORK, PA - On a gorgeous fall afternoon, the York College
men's soccer team got back in the win column with an 11-0
victory over Gallaudet University. The Spartans are now 10-1
(3-1 CAC) on the season while Gallaudet falls to 0-11 (0-6 CAC).
The first goal for the green and white came just 45 seconds into
the match as Mike O'Connell (Bowie, Md. / Archbishop
Spalding) tallied to give the home squad a 1-0
advantage. The sophomore's third goal of 2007 came in
his first career start. Matt Detzel (York, Pa. /
Central York) and Jason Mancuso (Toms River, N.J.
/ Toms River North) combined well to set up
O'Connell in front of the Bison net.
Merely 38 seconds later, Jon Ports (Baltimore, Md. /
McDonogh) tallied his eighth goal of the season.
O'Connell played a pretty through ball that sent Ports racing
toward the Bison net. The sophomore calmly slotted his shot
past Bison goalkeeper David Owens giving York the two goal lead.
The green and white's third score came on a beautiful
combination between a trio of Spartans. Mancuso lofted a pass
to the top of the box where Ports neatly chested it down to
Detzel's awaiting feet. The senior midfielder rifled
his shot to the far post to put York up by three.
Detzel's goal was his first as a Spartan.
Gallaudet did have a quality attempt at goal midway through the
stanza, as Brandon Wineberger tested Spartan goalkeeper
Ryan Hock (Brookeville, Md. / Sherwood). Hock was
up to the challenge as the sophomore sprawled to his right to knock
the ball away from danger.
Altogether, York would record nine goals in the first half and
take a 9-0 lead into the break.
After a barrage of first half goals, the second stanza proved
relatively quiet as York registered their final two scores.
In the 57th minute, Charlie Barrett (Newtown,
Pa./Archbishop Wood) notched his second tally of the year
as he hit a ripper from the top of the box that found the back of
the Bison net.
Sean Smith (East Lothian, Scotland/Musselburgh
Grammar) finished up the scoring for the green and white
in the 81st minute of action. The freshman international
collected the ball inside the box, made a nice turn toward goal,
and promptly scored the first tally of his career.
For the match, York had a 36-3 bulge in shots while also holding
a 4-0 advantage in corners.
Kyle Marks (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) earns the
win in net for the Spartans. Hock and Kyle Brooten
(Gladstone, N.J. / Bernards) saw significant minutes
between the pipes as each recorded a save to preserve the shutout.
Owens takes the loss in the Gallaudet goal as he notched six
saves over his 90 minutes of action.
York takes to the road this Wednesday traveling to Marymount for
their fifth CAC match of the season. Game time is scheduled
for 6:00 pm.
