Eagles Oust Spartans in CAC Quarterfinals

FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College men's lacrosse team's stay in the 2004 Capital Athletic Conference tournament was short as the Spartans fell to Mary Washington College 19-5 on Saturday afternoon in the tournament quarterfinals in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles, who improve to 10-3 overall, advance to face St. Mary's College in the tournament semifinals on Tuesday. The Spartans fall to 2-9 overall with the loss.
The Eagles asserted control of the game early as they led 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game. The Spartan receive a Keegan Mathe (Arlington Heights, IL/Mt. Hebron) goal at the 10:23 mark of the first quarter. Unfortunately, the Eagles scored the next eight goals of the game to take the 10-1 lead with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter. Adam Cross (Westminster, MD/Westminster) scored the final goal of the half as the Spartans trailed 10-2 with one half to play.
If there was any doubt about the final outcome, Mary Washington slammed the door with a 5-0 advantage in the third quarter. The Eagles edged the Spartans 4-3 in the fourth quarter to provide for the final advantage.
Cross led the Spartans with a pair of goals while Mathe, Josh Papsan (Baltimore, MD/North County), and Ben Libertini (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) each scored one goal. Andrew Collins (Olney, MD/Magruder) had two assists while Ben Bereznay (Red Lion, PA/Mt. Hebron) added one helper for YCP.
Chris Doddridge led the Eagles with five goals and two assists. Greg Rose added three goals and three assists while Dave Justen scored two goals and dished out one assist.
Three Spartan goalies saw action in the game. Matt Hanson (Marriottsville, MD/River Hill) started the game and allowed 14 goals in 40 minutes of work. Hanson snared 13 saves. Dave Welti (Stroudsburg, PA/Hicksville) played 15 minutes and allowed five goals while he made two saves. Dave Jacques (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) played the final five minutes of the game and did not allow a goal or record a save. Mike D'Eredita earned the win as he allowed two goals with five saves as he played the first half for MWC. Tim Boon played the second half and made seven saves in addition to allowing three goals.
The Spartans were outshot 50-23 while the Eagles also had a 27-24 advantage in ground balls. The Spartans won 15 of 27 face offs for the game.
The Spartans return to action next Sunday afternoon as they host Cazenovia College in the regular season finale. Game time on Sunday is set for 1:00 pm.
