Eagles Keep Spartans Winless in CAC Play

YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team dropped their final regular season Capital Athletic Conference game of the year as Mary Washington College handed the Spartans a 9-4 setback at a soggy Spartan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the CAC while YCP falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the league. These two teams will meet again on Saturday in Fredericksburg in the quarterfinal round of the 2004 CAC tournament.
The Eagles took the early lead on a Lee Thompson goal with 9:49 remaining in the opening quarter. Spartan sophomore Josh Papsan (Baltimore, MD/North County) tied the game a little over a minute later as he picked up an unassisted goal. Mark Fiore gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 7:31 mark.
The Eagles built on the 2-1 lead by outscoring York 4-0 in the second quarter as they led 6-1 at the intermission.
Andrew Collins (Olney, MD/Magruder) and Ben Bereznay (Red Lion, PA/Mt. Hebron (MD)) each picked up goals in the third quarter as Mary Washington led 7-3 through three quarters of play.
After YCP cut the gap to 7-4 on an Adam Cross (Westminster, MD/Westminster) goal, Mary Washington scored the final two goals of the game to provide for the final 9-4 margin.
Fiore led the Eagle offense as he had three goals and two assists for five points. Thompson added two goals while Dave Justen contributed a goal and two assists.
Collins, Cross, Papsan and Bereznay scored goals for YCP while Collins, Ben Libertini (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville), and Kurt Miller (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) each added an assist for York. Papsan collected a game-high 15 ground balls while he won nine face offs for YCP.
Mike D'Eredita earned the win in goal for MWC as he made eight saves for the Eagles. Matt Hanson (Marriottsville, MD/River Hill) recorded 14 stops for the Spartans in the loss.
The Eagles outshot the Spartans 37-23 while they also edged the green and white 63-62 in ground balls. The Spartans did win 9-of-16 face offs for the game.
Game time for Saturday's rematch in Fredericksburg is set for 1:00 pm.
