FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College men's lacrosse team fell to Mary Washington College 9-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinals on Monday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA.
The two teams were even through a quarter of action as the game was tied at four after one. The Spartans scored the second quarter's only goal to secure the 5-4 halftime lead. The Eagles turned the tables on the green and white in the third as the Spartans failed to score while MWC netted two nets to take the 6-5 lead.
That one goal lead would stand up for the Eagles as each team scored three goals in the fourth. The Eagles advance to face St. Mary's in the semifinals of the tournament on Thursday. Salisbury will host Goucher College in the other tournament semifinal.
The Spartans received two goals from a pair of seniors as Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) and Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) each found the back of the net twice. Hermes added three assists for five points while Wynne dished out a pair of helpers. Kurt Miller (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown), John Cannon (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga College), Jim Mancusi (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon), and Ricky Cherba (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) each scored one goal for the Spartans. Junior Brendan Brace (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) added York's other assist.
Matt Wiles and Mark Malone each scored two goals for the Eagles while Wiles added an assist. Joe Boulier added a goal and a pair of assists for MWC.
Junior Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) notched 14 saves while his counterpart, Mike D'Eredita, recorded ten saves for the Eagles.
The Spartans, now 3-9, return to action next Tuesday when they host Susquehanna University in York's final home game of the season. Game time at Spartan Field is set for 4:00 pm.
