Garnet Beat Spartans in High Scoring Affair

YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-10 defeat at the hands of Swarthmore College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Spartan Field.
Tom Coughlin started the scoring, notching a goal at 10:27 for the Garnet Tide. Swarthmore scored again before the Spartans were able to get on the board. Senior Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) scored York's only goal of the first quarter. The first quarter concluded with the green and white down by only one goal. Swarthmore, however, played a strong second quarter to open up their lead. With just over a minute gone, Joseph DeSimone rifled one past goalie Evan Mazzocchi (Swathmore, PA/Strath Haven). Blake Atkins scored the next two for the Garnet Tide, to extend their lead to four, at 5-1. Hermes brought the Spartans back within striking distance with his final two goals of the first half. He scored with 3:45 remaining, and then snuck one in before the buzzer to end the half, making the score 5-3.
Atkins notched his third goal of the game just :46 seconds into the second half. Hermes struck again at 12:34 for his fourth goal of the game. Swarthmore went on to score three more goals in the third quarter, while York managed to get two more by goalie Steven Isbister. Hermes scored the next goal followed by Pat Wynne's (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) first goal of the contest.
The fourth quarter proved to be exciting as York came close to tying the game. Hermes scored his sixth goal of the game 16 seconds into the quarter. The Garnet Tide responded with a goals of their own at 14:21 and added another one at 13:08. It seemed like the game was out of reach for the Spartans after Swarthmore's goal at 9:25 made the score 12-7. Wynne scored his second of the game at 6:48 to bring the Spartans to within four. Jason Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) scored with 2:15 remaining in the game to bring York to within striking distance late in the contest. Ricky Cherba (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) narrowed the gap to two goals but Swarthmore put the game out of reach when they scored with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Hermes had an outstanding game, scoring six goals on 12 shots. He now has 32 goals on the season, extending his own single-season Spartan record. Wynne scored two goals, and had one assist while Kemper and Cherba contributed with one goal apiece. Cherba also added an assist. Ryan Wynne dished out four assists. Mazzocchi made 16 saves while allowing 13 goals.
Atkins played a strong game for Swarthmore, scoring three goals and dishing out two assists. John Murphy scored four goals and picked up one assist while John Cleaver had two goals. Isbister made nine saves while allowing 10 goals.
The Spartans, now 2-5, return to action on Saturday when they travel to Franklin & Marshall College. Game time in Lancaster is set for 12:00 pm.
