WASHINGTON, DC-The York College men's lacrosse team earned a 14-8 victory at Catholic University on Saturday for their first CAC win of the season. The Spartans have now beaten Catholic in all three of their varsity seasons.
The Spartans found themselves down at the half as they blew and early 3-1 first quarter lead. The Cardinals led 5-4 at the half when Spartan coach Rob Horrigan changed a few things and sent his troops out for the second half, a second half that would be much different from the first.
The green and white led the Cardinals push the lead up to 6-4 before they came storming back, outscoring Catholic 10-2 over the last 25 minutes of the contest to earn the win, the first conference victory of coach Horrigan's tenure.
Senior Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) continued his stellar final year in the green and white as he tallied a school-record seven goals to go along with two assists for a school-record nine points. Those nine points broke Hermes' previous record of eight which he has established three previous times.
Junior Brendan Brace (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) added four goals while senior Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) dished out four assists. Jason Grace (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen), Kurt Miller (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown), and John Cannon (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga College) each added single goals for the Spartans.
Evan Mazzocchi (Swathmore, PA/Strath Haven) earned the win in goal as he made 15 saves on 38 Catholic shots.
The Spartans outshot the Cardinals 54-38 while Catholic held a 46-43 advantage in ground balls.
York, now 2-2 and 1-2 in the CAC, return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Marymount University for a CAC contest. Game time from Arlington is set for 3:00 pm.
