Dickinson Edges York in Another One Goal Spartan Loss

YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team dropped their second consecutive one-goal game as the Dickinson Red Devils handed the Spartans a 13-12 setback in non-conference action at Spartan Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans found themselves down early as the Red Devils scored three goals on their first three shots of the game. The Spartans would get on the board with 5:09 left in the period as Nick Smith (Crofton, MD/Arundel) tallied his first goal of the game. The Red Devils wasted little time responding as Jeff McFarland scored two goals in a 1:35 span to push the Red Devil lead to 5-1 to end the first quarter. McFarland tallied three of the five Red Devil goals in the period.
The Spartans answered the Dickinson challenge with a strong second period as they outscored the visitors 3-1 to go into the half trailing 6-4. Smith picked up two of the three goals in the frame.
The two squads slugged it out in the third as York scored five goals to the Red Devils four. Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) and Bill Bryson (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) each scored two goals in the period for YCP while Dickinson received one goal each from Matt McFarland, Jordan Seiken, Donald Peer and Jack Miner as Dickinson took a one-goal lead into the fourth.
The Red Devils extended that lead to two goals early in the fourth as Miner scored his second straight goal at the 11:34 mark. The Spartans cut their deficit back to one on a Smith goal with 7:34 remaining but it took Dickinson less than three minutes to again push the lead back to two as Jeremy Angell scored with 4:40 remaining in the game. York would again answer with a Brendan Brace (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) goal just 48 seconds later, however, Dickinson matched that tally with another Angell score a mere 39 seconds later to ice the game. Smith scored his fifth goal of the game with 2:50 left but the Spartans would be unable to tie the game as they possessed the ball the last 1:20 of the game without getting the equalizer.
The Spartans received a career-high five goals from Smith while Brace added three. Bryson and Hermes each added two goals while Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) chipped in a game-high three assists.
Dickinson received three goals from Miner and Jeff McFarland while Matt McFarland and Angell each added two tallies.
York, now 3-11, end their 2001 season on Wednesday afternoon when they host Western Maryland College in a non-conference contest. Game time at Spartan Field is set for 4:00 pm.
