YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team scored a record victory on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field as the green and white earned an 18-5 non-conference win over Eastern College.
The 18 goals established a new school record for goals in a game, breaking the old mark of 14 which was reached twice last season. The Spartans established new records with 44 shots on goal, margin of victory with a 13 goal difference, ground balls with 66, and face-off wins with 21. A new individual standard was also established as junior Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) scored seven goals which broke his previous mark of four. Hermes also tallied an assist for eight points which also set a new mark.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter before the Eagles sliced the deficit in half midway through the period. The Spartans then took off as they outscored the Eagles 6-2 in the second period to take an 8-3 lead into the half.
York put the game away in the third as they outscored Eastern 9-0 in the period, turning a five goal lead into a 14-goal bulge. Hermes scored four of the nine goals in the period.
Eastern outscored the Spartans 2-1 in the fourth to leave the final at 18-5.
In addition to Hermes' record-setting performance, Jason Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) scored three goals and dished out one assist. Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) dished out a game-high three assists while he also scored one goal. Zach Fine (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) and Trey King (Columbia, MD/South Carroll) each contributed two goals and two assists for the Spartan offense. Nick Smith (Crofton, MD/Arundel) and Justin Johnson (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) each scored a single goal while Johnson and Bill Bryson (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) each tallied an assist.
Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) earned the win in goal as he made 13 saves while he allowed three goals in his 45 minutes of action. Jeff Pie (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) recorded seven saves and allowed two goals in his 15 minutes of action.
Jon-Marc Haden tallied two goals to lead the Eagles.
York, now 3-9, return to action on Wednesday when they travel to DeSales University for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
