YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team opened their 2001 campaign with a 17-1 loss to Salisbury State University on Sunday afternoon at a snowy and wet Spartan Field in York, Pa. The Sea Gulls are currently ranked second in the nation in Division III men's lacrosse.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 10 seconds into the contest and never looked back from there. The Sea Gulls continued to play well and dominate play throughout the first two quarters of action as they took a 14-0 lead into the intermission.
The Spartans played well after the half as they allowed just one goal in the third period and two in the fourth as the very dangerous Sea Gull offense was held in check by the green and white defense.
York got their lone goal from junior Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) midway through the fourth period as York avoided the shutout. Junior Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) earned the assist on Hermes' goal.
Salisbury was led by freshman Andy Arnold as he tallied a game-high five goals. Mike Sedlak added two goals and one assist while Josh Bergey added a goal and a team-high three assists. Junior Mike Roberts was another multiple point scorer with one goal and two assists while Steve Brianas and Chris Hayes each added a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) made his debut in goal as he recorded 15 saves on 32 Sea Gull shots. Pat Tewes was SSU's starter in goal and made one save for the Gulls. Backup Rob LaChance made six saves and allowed York's lone goal.
The loss was a far cry from last year when the Spartans allowed 30 goals in their first-ever varsity contest.
York, now 0-1 and 0-1 in the CAC, return to action on Wednesday when they host Villa Julie College for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
