YORK, PA - The York College men's lacrosse team ended their 2000 home schedule with an impressive 14-4 win over Allentown College in a non-conference match at Spartan Field on Thursday afternoon. The win saw the Spartans produce their highest offensive output of the season while it also established a new school record for margin of victory with the 10 goal bulge.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from sophomore Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Baltimore Poly HS). The Centaurs cut the deficit in half with a goal from Taylor Fields with 9:09 left in the opening quarter. The green and white would respond with three straight goals, two by Bob Lutz (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS), to forge a 5-1 lead. Allentown got a goal with 25 seconds remaining in the quarter to make the score 5-2 after one stanza.
York tacked on another two quick goals to start the second quarter before the Centaurs notched a goal. The two teams then traded goals before senior Tom Spray-Fry (Chestertown, MD/Kent County HS) closed out the scoring in the period with his second goal of the quarter with 25 seconds left in the half.
The Spartan defense was the story of the second half as the green and white tossed a shutout against Allentown. The Spartan defense held the Centaurs to just 11 shots in the second half as goalie Colin Johnson (Hellam, PA/Lower Merion HS) made eight saves during the last two quarters. The defense, led by senior Jody Carruth (Waldorf, MD/St. Mary's Ryken HS), freshman Andrew Marsh (Vienna, VA/Flint Hill School HS) and junior Chris Waskey (Queenstown, MD/Queen Anne County HS), played their best game of the season as they held an opponent to under double digits for the second time in 2000. For the game, Johnson made 16 saves on 25 Allentown shots.
The Spartans tallied five goals in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring as the green and white earned their third victory of the season and their second at Spartan Field.
The Spartan offense was paced by Hermes as he had seven points on four goals and three assists. Lutz, Spray-Fry, Jason Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air HS), and David Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) each added two goals to the YC P attack while Kemper also added two assists.
Fields led the Allentown offense with two goals while John Ramey and Pat Hamill each scored one goal.
York, now 3-9, close out their regular season with a road game at Dickinson College next Friday at 4:00 pm.
