YORK, PA - The York College men's lacrosse team seemed more prepared for battled today as they hosted Mary Washington College in a Capital Athletic Conference match-up. Unfortunately for the home fans, the Spartans fell 14-6 to the Eagles Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. Although they didn't come away with a victory, the Spartans showed definite improvement as they continue to improve game to game.
The green and white looked more comfortable on their home turf today as they began the game with a stellar first quarter. Mary Washington's Will Gunther scored the game's first goal, however York's Scott Hermes (New Freedom,PA/Baltimore Poly) answered back, scoring off of an assist form Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore,PA/Strath Haven HS) to knot the score at one.
The second quarter was not as kind to the Spartan as the Eagles would score relentlessly and almost at will, as they tallied eight goals in the quarter and left the Spartans scoreless as they took a 9-1 lead into intermission
The Spartans would refuse to lay down as Bill Bryson (Fairfax,VA/Chantilly HS) scored the first goal of the second half. His teammates would follow his lead, as York had three different players tally three more goals. The Spartan defense stepped up as they held the Eagles to one goal in the third quarter as they limited the guest to just three shots in the quarter.
The Eagles bounced back in the fourth quarter as they were lead by Mike Malin. Malin scored three goals to put the game out of reach for the Spartans. Malin ended the contest with a game-high six goals while Gunther added four goals and three assists.
Both goalies were kept busy today. Spartan goalie Colin Johnson (Hellam,PA/Lower Merion HS) saw 29 shots from the Eagle's attack while, the Eagle's goalie Chris Vibert was assaulted by 25 Spartan shots. Johnson notched 12 saves while Vibert recorded nine stops.
York, now 1-5 and 1-4 in the CAC, return to action on Wednesday when they host Susquehanna University in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
