SALISBURY, MD - The York College men's lacrosse team started their inaugural varsity campaign with a 30-3 loss to Salisbury State University on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury, MD in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Sea Gulls are the defending national champions and the five-time CAC defending champions. The Sea Gulls are also ranked first in the nation in Division III men's lacrosse.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter of action. Spartan junior Bill Bryson (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly (VA) HS) scored York's first-ever varsity goal as he scored an unassisted goal with 6:42 left in the first quarter.
Salisbury State tacked on eight more goals to take a 14-2 halftime lead. The Sea Gulls built their advantage to 24-2 thanks to a 10-0 advantage in the third period while they outscored the visitors 6-1 in the final period to come to the final score.
Sophomore Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Baltimore Poly HS) scored York's two other goals as he notched one in the second period and one in the fourth to close out the Spartan scoring. Jason Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air HS) added the Spartans lone assist.
Salisbury was led by Joe High as he poured in a game-high six goals. High also added two assists to the Sea Gull attack. Kevin Fox chipped in with four goals while Chris Turner and Tim Parks each added three goals to the potent SSU attack. Fifteen different Sea Gulls scored in the contest.
Three different Sea Gulls manned the goal for SSU as they combined to record three saves while Colin Johnson (Hellam, PA/Lower Merion HS) went the distance in goal for York. Johnson notched 19 saves on 72 Sea Gull shots.
Salisbury outshot York 72-9 and held a 29-6 advantage in face-offs.
The Spartans, now 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the CAC, return to action on Wednesday, March 8 when they travel to Villa Julie College. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
