Women’s Basketball Secures Postseason Berth at Albright

READING, Pa. – The York women's basketball clinched a Commonwealth postseason spot with a 39-37 victory at Albright on Saturday.

Entering the day, York needed a win and either a loss by Alvernia or Stevenson to clinch the fourth and final spot in the Commonwealth Women's Basketball Championship. The Spartans got the help they needed and more as both Alvernia and Stevenson fell on their home floors. Messiah enters the postseason as the top seed, followed by Widener in second, Alvernia in third and York in fourth.

Team Records
York: 10-15 (8-6 MACC)
Widener: 10-15 (6-8 MACC)

Highlights
The two teams played a competitive, low-scoring first half with York owning a 15-13 lead after seven lead changes and three ties. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket as the Spartans shot 17.9% from the field and the Lions shot just 25.0%, while both combined to shoot 0-for-16 from three-point range. Albright's Julia Zakovitch led all scorers with six points and Alyssa Dougherty led the Spartans with five.

Makenna Zimmerman led all players with eight rebounds in the first half which fueled a key 23-18 rebounding advantage for the Spartans which helped put the Green and White in the lead at the break.

The Spartans stretched the lead to as much as eight late in the third quarter, but the Lions scored the last three points of the period to cut the lead to five heading into the fourth quarter. York increased the lead to nine early in the fourth quarter, but Albright continued to slug it out as the two teams combined for 29 points for their highest scoring quarter of the day.

A pair of Chirsdin Jones free throws had the Lions down two with 2:08 left, but those wound up being the final points of the game. Albright had one last chance at extending the game with a Zakovitch jumper at the buzzer, but fortunately for the Spartans her shot missed the mark.

Up Next
The three-seed Spartans will travel to top-seed Messiah on Wednesday for a Commonwealth semifinal round matchup set for a 7 p.m. start.
