Women’s Basketball Season Closes in Commonwealth Semifinal

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The fourth-seed York women's basketball saw their season come to a close with a 65-52 loss at top-seed Messiah in a Commonwealth Semifinal round contest on Wednesday night.

Highlights
The Spartans fell into an early hole and trailed 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. The deficit grew to as much as 13 midway through the second quarter, but York went on a 16-4 rally to cut the Messiah lead down to just one with 1:25 left before halftime. The Falcons responded by scoring five unanswered points to end the quarter and took a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

Messiah racked up a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter before York again reeled the Falcons back in and cut the margin down to one at the end of the period. The Spartans out-scored Messiah, 17-12, in the third quarter and kept that momentum rolling into the fourth.

Breana Grim gave the Spartans their first and only lead of the game on a jumper with 8:43 left, but the Falcons responded with a Hope Cook three-pointer on their ensuing possession to regain the lead. Cook's trey sparked a run of 13 unanswered points which ultimately clinched the game for Messiah as they went ahead by 11 with 2:14 left to play.

Messiah will take on Widener for the third-straight year in the Commonwealth Final on Saturday. Tip-off in Grantham, Pa. is set for 3 p.m.

The Spartans are now 8-31 all-time against Messiah with the Falcons winning the last nine meetings … York capped the season 3-10 away from and Messiah improved to 12-1 on their home floor … the Spartans fall to 1-4 in Commonwealth postseason play since first appearing in the conference postseason tournament in 2021 … Messiah continues their pursuit of their 17th conference title … Spartan seniors led the way offensively as Makenna Zimmerman poured in a season-high tying 16 points and Breana Grim racked up 13 … Alyssa Dougherty paced York with 10 rebounds.
