Spartan Streak Snapped Against #4 Messiah

YORK, Pa. - The York women's soccer team had their nine-game unbeaten streak and program record tying seven-game win streak halted with a 1-0 loss to fourth-ranked Messiah at home on Wednesday night.

Team Records
Messiah 16-2-0 (6-0-0 MACC)
York 12-4-2 (5-1-0 MACC)

How It Happened
After racking up multiple chances through the opening minutes, the Falcons put a tally on the board in the 15th minute by way of Addi Martin. The sophomore midfielder pushed hard towards the box, but pulled back slightly to create shooting space and lofted a left-footed shot to the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.

The Spartans were held without a single shot in the first half as the Falcons owned a 9-0 margin. York kept the damage to a minimum as they combined for three saves with two by Joss Metz and one team save.

Metz faced 11 more shots in the second half and went on to make three more saves to bring her total to five on the night as she kept York in contention.

The Spartans mounted a surge in the closing seconds with Jess Bentzel hustling to get off a corner kick with time expiring. Bentzel managed to serve a pass into the box where it eventually settled on the foot of Meg Kalthof. The junior forward managed to strike the ball with authority, but a Falcon defender got a foot on the shot as time ticked away to break up what could have been the equalizing tally.

Notes
York is now 1-17-0 all-time against Messiah with the Falcons claiming wins in the last six meetings … the Spartans fall to 6-3-0 at home this season and Messiah improves to 7-1-0 on the road with four-straight wins … with the win, Messiah secured their 10th-straight regular season Commonwealth title … York will need a win or a tie on Saturday against Stevenson in the regular season finale to lock up the Commonwealth's second seed for the fourth-straight season … the Spartans saw their record-tying seven-game win streak come to a close, a feat they also achieved in 1998 and 2006 … the Green and White also had their unbeaten streak ended at nine games with a record of 7-0-2 during that span which is the fourth-longest such streak in program history and the second-longest such streak under head coach Kelly Wakeman … York has only given up 11 goals on the season which still currently ranks as the second-fewest in program history.
