Shuey and the Defense Power the Spartans to a 2-0 Victory

Senior Carrie Shuey had two assists while the defense pitched a shutout against St. Mary's

YORK, PA – The York College field hockey team opened their 2022 campaign with a 2-0 shutout of St. Mary's on a beautiful Thursday night in York. The Spartans improve to 1-0 while the Seahawks fall to 0-1.
York got two assists from Carrie Shuey in addition to the shutout effort from sophomore goalie Belle Fields.

How It Happened
• The Seahawks looked poised to get on the board early as they earned a penalty corner a mere 45 seconds into the game. The Spartan defense thwarted the chance and that was really the Seahawks best chance in the first half. York out shot St. Mary's 3-0 the rest of the quarter but only Hannah Huffman's shot in the 14th minute would come on target.
• York continued to carry the play in the second quarter as they out shot St. Mary's 9-0 but Seahawk goalie Kaley Christman kept the game scoreless with three saves.
• The Spartans had a great chance seven minutes into the third as Carrie Shuey had a shot that just missed the far post. A second chance eluded York a minute later but the Green and White finally cashed in on a chance in the 40th minute. Shuey delivered a beautiful ball from the right wing. The pass was collected by freshman Kat Knox who calmly delivered the ball into the back of the cage for her first collegiate tally.
• The Seahawks had a pair of chances a mere minute later but the Spartan defense kept the Hawks off the board.
• The fourth quarter was much like the previous three as the Spartans controlled the tempo of the game. The Green and White converted an insurance goal in the final minute of play as Shuey set a ball towards the goal that got tipped in by Maggie Spadafora for the goal.
