Katie Fost is in her eighth season as the Spartan head field hockey coach in the fall of 2024. Fost enters the campaign with an overall record of 78-40 as she is third on the all-time Spartan wins list for head coaches. Her teams have also compiled an impressive conference record of 30-9.
In 2023, the Spartans followed up a banner 2022 campaign with another 16-win season and a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason where they advanced to the second round. Junior goalie Belle Fields became the third different Spartan under Fost's tutelage to earn NFHCA All-American honors as she was named a third-team selection. Fields also earned CSC Academic All-America honors and was tabbed the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Year with 11 shutouts on the season. Four Spartans earned All-Region honors, seven landed on the all-conference team and a trio earned Academic All-MAC accolades.
Fost led the Spartans to their best season in 2022 as York earned their first NCAA Tournament berth. Fost, who was named the Commonwealth Coach of the Year, led the Green and White to a school-record 16 wins as York advanced to the MAC Commonwealth title game for the first time in school history. The Spartans put a school-record eight players on the MAC All-Commonwealth team and five Spartans earned NFHCA All-Region V honors. The Spartans recorded 13 shutouts as they outscored their opponents 65-14 for the year. The Green and White's at-large berth resulted in a 4-2 first round win over DeSales at Kinsley Field before the year came to a close with a 1-0 loss at top ranked Salisbury in the second round.
After the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID, the Spartans put together an impressive 2021 as York went 14-5 overall. The Spartans finished 7-1 in the MAC Commonwealth, good for second in their first year in the MAC Commonwealth. Fost saw Hannah Huffman, Sara Pique, Riley Buschert, Hayley Taylor and Maggie Spadafora earn All-MAC Commonwealth honors. Huffman and Pique were named the NFHCA All-Region squads.
The Spartans went 10-10 in 2019 with a number of tight contests. York dropped four one-goal decisions including a trio of overtime losses during the year. York placed four players on the All-CAC team with Dana Meehling and Amanda Boclair earning first-team honors. Meehling and Boclair both earned NFHCA All-Region accolades for the Green and White.
In Fost's second season, she led the Spartans to a 10-8 record and 4-1 in the vaunted CAC. The Spartans would earn a first-round bye and hosted nationally ranked Christopher Newport in the CAC tournament semifinals but would fall 2-1. Fost coached four all-conference players in 2018 with junior Greta Plappert, senior Lindsay Nye, and sophomore Dana Meehling all making first-team along with sophomore Julea Truskey earning second-team accolades. Plappert and Nye also earned first-team All-South Atlantic region honors while Meehling picked up a second-team honor. Plappert was also named a third-team All-American in 2018. Fost has now coached an All-American in back-to-back years after Ali Posey was a second-team selection in 2017.
Fost led the Spartans to a 12-6 record in her debut season as the head coach and took York to the semi-finals of the CAC championships.
Fost came to the Spartan program from Bates College as she spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach for the Bobcats. Prior to her time at Bates, Fost was a graduate assistant coach at Goucher College during the 2013 and 2014 campaigns.
Fost is no stranger to Spartan fans as she was a four-year letter winner at Salisbury University. Fost was a member of the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Sea Gull squad. She was a team captain in 2010 and was a four-year member of the CAC All-Academic squad. Fost was a three-time All-Capital Athletic Conference selection as a midfielder for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury went 71-11 during Fost's four years including a perfect 26-0 in CAC play. The Gulls also went 8-3 in the NCAA Tournament during Fost's time in the maroon and gold including the 2009 national championship.
Fost owns a BA of Science in exercise science from Salisbury while she also owns Masters degrees in athletic administration from Goucher (2015) and applied health physiology from Salisbury (2013). Fost owns a NSCA CSCS (National Strength Coaches Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) certification. She also owns a USA Field Hockey Level II Coaching accreditation. She also a part of the York College athletic department's strength and conditioning staff.
