Box Score ST. MARY'S, MD – The Spartan field hockey team made it a clean weekend sweep as they traveled to St. Mary's and picked up a 2-1 win on Sunday. The Spartans opened their season Saturday with a 7-0 win over Wilkes and then traveled to St. Mary's today after the game was postponed due to tropical storm Ida on Wednesday.

How It Happened
• The first quarter saw the two teams go back and forth with momentum being evenly distributed. Late in the quarter, the Spartans started to seize momentum as they had back-to-back penalty corners with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Spartans fired off four straight shots followed by another penalty corner. The Seahawks got a defensive save from defender Charlotte Horn to keep York off the board as the game was scoreless after 15 minutes of play.
• The Spartans started the second quarter off on the attack as a
Maggie Spadafora shot was cleared off the line by defender Erica Schuitt for the second defensive save in the first 18 minutes of the game. The Spartans had another great chance at the end of the half with a penalty corner, a shot that was saved and another shot that was just high.
• York held a 13-4 margin in shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal and a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners. St. Mary's goalie Meaghan Collins made seven first half saves while the Seahawks also had a pair of defensive saves to keep York off the board.
• The Spartans finally broke through in the 33
rd minute. The Spartans had a corner and the initial pass went to the top to
Sara Pique. Pique made a great pass to
Mya Gerena in the middle of the circle. Gerena slid another great pass to
Hannah Huffman who finished off the chance for her second goal of the year. The Spartans took the 1-0 lead to the fourth quarter.
•York pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 53
rd minute as the Spartans drew a penalty corner. Huffman fired off the initial shot off the corner. The shot was saved and
Libby Wild collected the loose ball and fired it past Collins for her first collegiate goal.
• The Seahawks answered quickly as they drew a penalty corner in the 55
th minute. The shot by Gabrielle Corder was cleared off the line by
Hayley Taylor but on the ensuing scramble, St. Mary's was awarded another corner. This time, they made the Spartans pay as Corder got the insert and found Hayden Kesner who finished off the chance, cutting the Spartan lead in half with 4:55 remaining in regulation.
• The Spartans got a green card with 2:48 remaining in regulation but managed to kill off the rest of the game. With about 40 seconds left, the Seahawks made a rush towards the Spartan goal but Taylor stepped up, stole the ball and started York up the field where they would maintain possession the remainder of the game.

The Spartans stay on the road for their next game as they head to Elizabethtown to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference contest. Game time in Elizabethtown is set for 4:30 pm. After the trip to Elizabethtown, the Spartans will begin a three-game homestand on Saturday against Bryn Mawr.
