GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• The Spartans started well, converting their first two shots, a jumper from Morgan Kuehne and a three pointer from Sam Hruz to take a 5-0 lead. A minute and a half into the contest, the Captains put their first two points on the board, but 18 seconds later, Kuehne had another bucket and York led 7-2. From there, though, the Spartans went the final 8:09 in the first quarter without a point. York went 0-for-10 while CNU scored 14 to take a 16-7 lead at the end of the first.
• Finally, it was Morgan Golec who stopped the bleeding for York. Her layup less than 30 seconds into the second quarter trimmed the deficit to seven, but then York went another four minutes without a point. In a blink of an eye, CNU had taken a 26-9 lead midway through the second. The Captain lead was as large as 21 in the second quarter. The Spartans fought back, though, and behind a Sam Mocniak three they trailed 37-19 at the halftime break. York turned the ball over 23 times in the first half, more than their total in 20 full regular season games.
• At the five-minute mark in the third quarter, CNU led 48-30 and the Captains seemed firmly in control. But, Kuehne and Katie Wagner put together a 9-0 run, Wagner scoring five and Kuehne four, to close the gap to single digits for the first time since the early portions of the second quarter. After a Sarah Shearer jumper, York was within seven, and ended the third down 52-43, outscoring Christopher Newport 24-15 in the period. The Green and White were able to get back into the ballgame by turning the ball over just seven times in the whole second half.
• The deficit hovered around the 10-point mark for much of the fourth quarter, with neither team able to gain momentum. That would change, though. CNU extended a 60-49 lead to 68-50 in less than two minutes to put the Spartans away for good, defeating York 73-52.
