UMW Gets on Top Early, Cruises Past York in CAC Match Up

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The University of Mary Washington field hockey squad jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as they downed the York College Spartans 5-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The game will likely play a critical role in determining the second seed, and first round bye, in the upcoming CAC tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Eagles wasted not time in getting on the board as Allegra Massey-Elim netted the first goal of the game off a pass from Lauren Hopkins. The goal came a mere 1:37 into the game and came on the Eagles first shot. Mary Washington drew a penalty corner 1:19 into the game.

• Mary Washington made it 2-0 just 1:19 later as Hopkins scored off a pass from Christine Loehr.

• The Eagles kept pouring it on early as Lexie Dixson made it 3-0 off a pass from Hopkins 4:42 into the game.

• The Spartans yanked starting keeper Eve Hauptle as she surrendered three goals on three shots in 4:42 of play.

• Senior Alexa Taylor prevented it from becoming four goals on four shots with a defensive save at the 7:40 mark.

• The Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 when Morgan LaRowe scored off a pass from Hopkins with just under ten minutes left in the first half.

• Mary Washington outshot York 7-3 in the first 35 minutes while the Spartans held a 5-2 margin in penalty corners.

• Lauren Hopkins closed out her huge day with an unassisted goal ten minutes into the second half. Hopkins finished the game with seven points on two goals and three assists.

• Spartan sophomore Lindsay Nye prevented the shutout with her 17th goal of the year. It was unassisted and came with just over five minutes left in regulation.

• York would put three more shots on target in the final five minutes of the game but all three attempts were saved as the Eagles preserved their four goal margin of victory.

The Spartans fall to 5-34 all time against Mary Washington as the Spartans have now lost 21 straight to the Eagles … York has been outscored 16-5 in their last three games against Mary Washington …  Lindsay Nye snapped her two match scoreless streak with her 17th goal of the year … she continues to lead the Spartans and the CAC in goals (17) and points (38) … Nye holds a two-point lead over Lauren Hopkins after Hopkins had seven points in the win over York … Ali Posey is ranked fifth in the CAC in points with 24 while she is sixth in goals (10) … the nine shots were a season low for the Spartans … it is the first time this year that York has not reached double figures in shots … York's two defensive saves tied a season high as York now has five defensive saves in their last three games … Nye's goal prevented York from being shutout for the first time this year … the Spartans are three games through a grueling four game road trip as York is 1-2 and has gotten outscored 11-6 … Eve Hauptle's 4:42 in goal was the shortest start of her career … Hauptle's previous shortest outing was the 5:19 she played against Elizabethtown last year on September 9.

 

UP NEXT

The Spartans conclude their season-high four game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Upper Montclair, New Jersey to face the Montclair State University Red Hawks in a non-conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am.
