Spartans Surrender 1-0 Victory to Gettysburg

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The York College men's' soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at home to Gettysburg College on Friday evening.

The win for Gettysburg (2-0) snapped a seven-match losing streak to York (1-1), which started with a 2-1 win for the Spartans in 2004.

The game, which started at 4:00 p.m., eclipsed the three-hour mark due to an hour and 27-minute lightning delay that started with 23:09 left to play in the first half.

Prior to the delay, the Spartans looked to be finding their groove offensively as they recorded all four of their first half shots to go along with one corner.

Following the delay, York fell into a stall offensively, but found its rhythm again after halftime. The Spartans started the second half out-shooting the Bullets 4-0 through the first 13 minutes.

In the 79th minute, Gettysburg's Kingsley Nzekwe carried the ball to the endline on the left side of the box and fed a cross through the middle. A Gettysburg player attempted a flying header, but the ball sailed over his head to Matt Stine on the backside of the play who one-touched it into the net for the game's only goal.

The Spartans went into scramble mode as they frantically tried to tally the equalizer. They managed to keep the pressure on the bullets with a corner kick and multiple set plays of throw-ins in the final 10 minutes of play, but could not land any of their shots on target.

The last best chance York had came in the 86th minute when Matt Freibaum (New Market, Md. / Linganore) dribbled the ball between his defender's legs on the right side, sent a cross into the box to Greg Bechard (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's) who settled it with his chest and set a reverse bicycle kick just wide to the right from 10 yards out.

York finished the game with an 11-8 shot advantage, led by Bechard with four, while Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) recorded three saves on four shots on goal from the Bullets.

The Spartans return to the pitch on Sunday when they host Lycoming College at 3:00 p.m. on Graham Field.
