Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. – The York College men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory on the road at Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday evening.
The win today snapped a four-game skid for the Spartans (3-6-1) and is a nice reward for a team that has had six one-goal games on the season while out-shooting opponents 162-108 on the year.
The hard-working Spartans started today's contest like they have throughout the year, dictating the tempo and racking up the early chances.
York accumulated six unanswered shots, four of which landed on goal, before finally catching a break and landing one in the back of the net in the 16th minute of play. Nigel Robinson (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) did the damage for York as he beat the goalie to the right side after receiving a superb pass from Greg Bechard (Newark, Del. / St. Mark's) to spring free of the defense.
Robinson is now tied with Bechard for the team lead with three goals on the year, while Bechard sits at the top in points with eight.
York dominated the first half, out-shooting the Dutchmen (3-6) 9-2 with five of its shots landing on goal. The Spartans held LVC without a shot until the 30th minute of play.
The Spartans continued to pressure the Dutchmen in the second half. They racked up five shots, three on goal, before a shot by Robinson was saved in the 79th minute and Matt Freibaum (New Market, Md. / Linganore) was there to easily knock in the rebound for his first tally of the season.
York looked to add to its lead even after scoring its second tally as the Green and White racked up seven more shots in the final 10 minutes.
Spartan goalkeeper Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) made a key save to start the final minute of play to keep the clean sheet in tact for his squad.
York finished the game out-shooting Lebanon Valley 22-11 with a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.
York owns a 70-55 shot-on-goal margin against its opponents thus far in the season.
Today's win gives York a 15-1 lead in the all-time series against LVC and extends the Spartans' win streak to five games over the Dutchmen.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they face their second ranked conference opponent of the season in No. 3 Christopher Newport University at 3:00 p.m. at Graham Field.
