Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The York College men's soccer team picked up its first road win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (2-2-1) had to stay determined to pull off the one-goal victory as they faced a frustrating Crusader defense that gave up 25 shots, but also managed to record a season-high seven saves.
York pressured Susquehanna (2-3) early with five shots in the first 17 minutes. The Spartans finally caught a break as they earned a penalty shot, which senior captain Ryan Donahue (York, Pa. / York Suburban) converted for the game's first score.
The Spartans continued the offensive assault, throwing six more shots at the net to end the first half, but failing to put any in the goal.
York then faced a setback early in the second half as the Crusaders tallied an equalizer in the 53rd minute on just their fifth shot of the game.
However, the Spartans went back to work and kept plugging away until they broke through with another tally in the 66th minute when Joel Teston (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park) finished on a cross from Christopher Saberton (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) for the eventual game-winner.
With the lead, the Spartan defense went to work and sealed the victory as it held the Crusaders to zero shot attempts in the final 18 minutes of play.
York finished the game with a 25-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Spartans have recorded 20-plus shots in each of their last two games.
The Spartans hit the road again for their next contest as they travel to Baltimore, Md. to face Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
