Spartans Eliminated From CAC Postseason by 4-1 Loss at Mary Washington

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The York College field hockey had its season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament with a 4-1 loss on the road to No. 11 Mary Washington.

The Spartans (10-9) found themselves in a hole early as the Eagles (14-4) took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest on a penalty corner. The goal came courtesy Haley Kane who is usually known for dishing out assists as she leads the conference with 11.

Mary Washington remained highly effective on the penalty corner as the Eagles added on two more goals in the first half, both on penalty corner plays. Kane added the second goal and Carlee Budd had the third.

The Eagles suffocated the Spartans with relentless offensive pressure throughout the entire first half. Mary Washington compiled an 11-1 shot margin and a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners. The 12 penalty corners are the most the Spartans have allowed in a single half this season.

The Eagles did not take their foot off the gas in the second half as they finished the half with a 13-6 advantage in shots. They delivered one final parting shot as they tacked on their fourth goal of the contest in the 55th minute on Budd's second of the game.

The Spartans demonstrated their will to keep fighting, as they have done all year, and avoided the shutout by scoring with less than seven minutes to play. Morgan Weaver (Ephrata, Pa. / Ephrata) recorded the tally as she knocked in a loose ball rebound in a scrum in front of the cage.

Mary Washington finished with a 24-7 advantage in shots and a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Spartan goalkeeper Eve Hauptle (Alexandria, Va. / West Potomac), who faced relentless pressure all game, finished with 12 saves, one shy of tying her career-best.

The Eagles advance to the CAC Championship where they will face either No. 7 Salisbury or No. 13 Christopher Newport on Saturday.

The Spartans close out the season and the third under head coach Carly Zinn who has led her team to back-to-back double-digit win totals and trips to the CAC Tournament semifinals.

The end of the 2015 season also marks the end of the career for York's lone senior, Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa. / South Western). Martin has been a mainstay in the Spartan midfield and one of the most reliable players throughout her four years as she has appeared in 70 games in her career. Martin has compiled 44 total points on 16 goals and 12 assists.

Note: The box score shows Autumn Mallory with the goal and Alexa Taylor with a defensive save. The correct statistics should have Morgan Weaver credited for the goal and Kenidy Kubitz with the defensive save.
