Shenandoah Snaps Spartan Win Streak

WINCHESTER, VA – The York College field hockey squad had their three match win streak snapped as the Shenandoah Hornets edged the Spartans 3-2 in non-conference play in Winchester, Virginia on Wednesday evening.

The Spartans suffer just their second loss of the year as they now stand at 7-2. The Hornets improve to 4-4 with the victory.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Kelani Bailey scored off an assist from Presha Merritt on a penalty corner.

The Green and White tied the game exactly seven minutes later when freshman Beth Patrick (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) found the back of the cage for her third goal of the year.

The Spartans headed to the half tied at one despite being outshot 9-4 while the Hornets also had an 8-2 margin in penalty corners.

Shenandoah took the lead for good just 3:46 into the second half as Ashley Cross notched her seventh goal of the year off a Merritt assist on another penalty corner.

The Hornets pushed the lead to 3-1 when Bailey scored her second goal of the game with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.

Freshman Shania Gelvin (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) got the Spartans to within one with 8:05 left in the game with her sixth goal of the year. York would be unable to muster any further offense as they suffered the one-goal loss.

The Hornets finished the contest holding a 13-6 margin in total shots while the shots on goal was much closer at 6-3. Shenandoah also finished the match with a 9-5 margin in penalty corners.

Shenandoah's Jenna Rampale earned the win as she recorded one save in her 70 minutes of work. Freshman Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) suffered the loss as she allowed three goals while she made three saves in the game.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host Lynchburg in a non-conference contest. Game time at Kinsley Field is set for 3:00 pm. The Spartans will celebrate "Play for Trey" day during the afternoon. For more information about "Play for Trey" day, please check the Spartan website.
