Box Score YORK, Pa. – A penalty stroke by sophomore Sydney LaMarsh (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) in overtime gave the York College field hockey team a 3-2 victory over Frostburg State on Wednesday afternoon at Kinsley Field on Senior Day.
LaMarsh stole the ball near midfield and dribbled all the way into the top of the circle where she was fouled as she attempted to execute a shot on goal. LaMarsh was awarded the stroke and finished with a crisp shot to the upper right corner of the cage.
York (12-6, 3-3 CAC) took a 2-0 lead just over ten minutes into the second half, but a second-half surge by Frostburg (6-12, 0-6) knotted the game up 2-2 with less than five minutes to play in regulation.
The Spartans' first goal came just over three minutes into the game courtesy of the team's leading scorer Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion). Posey set up in the middle of the circle and unleashed a sharp, reverse sweep shot to the upper right corner of the cage to bring her goal total to 12 on the year.
York's second tally came just over 10 minutes into the second half when Shania Gelvin (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) fed a pass back up the middle from the left side of the cage to senior captain Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) who finished with a low shot to the left corner. Playing in her final regular season game in a York uniform, Petrillo made the most of the moment as she recorded her first goal of the season.
The Spartans will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday for the first round of the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Tournament. Game time is to be determined. Check out ycpspartans.com for all the latest news and notes on York College field hockey.
