Box Score DOVER, Del. – The York College Field hockey team used an early second-half tally to secure a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference win at Wesley on Saturday afternoon.
York (11-6, 2-3 CAC) came out of the gates with confidence, out-shooting Wesley (6-11, 1-5) 5-0 through the first five minutes of play.
The Wolverines countered with three unanswered shots of their own, one of which was saved by senior defender Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), but York served up the first big blow with a goal midway through the first half.
Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) slipped a shot through the goalie pads as she received a helper from freshman Shania Gelvin (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road).
Wesley countered less than 10 minutes later with a goal of its own and sent the game into the locker room tied at 1-1, but not before another Spartan defensive, as it was senior Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) who preserved the tie heading into halftime.
Not happy about giving up a goal and taking a tie game into the half, the Spartans came out in the second half determined to take back the lead.
Less than two minutes into the second stanza, York's leading scorer Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion) scooped a shot from the top of the circle over the goalie's head. The goal came on a penalty corner as Saylor inserted the ball to Posey for the assist.
Mallory's goal gives her 10 on the year to go along with 21 points as she joins Posey to be the only two Spartans with double-digit goal and point totals
The Spartans closeout their regular season on Wednesday with a home game against Frostburg State at 3:30 p.m.
