Box Score DOVER, Del. – The York College field hockey squad suffered
a tough 3-0 road loss to Wesley College on Saturday in Capital
Athletic Conference action. The defeat drops the Spartans to 5-4 on
the season including 2-2 in CAC play while the Wolverines improve
to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Host Wesley got on the board in the 30th minute as
Sheree Pleasanton knocked home what would prove to be the
game-winner. Pleasanton stole the ball from the Spartan defense and
side-stepped York goalkeeper Maggie Schlauch
before sending her shot around a Spartan defender to put the
Wolverines up one 29:37 into the contest.
It would not take long for Wesley to go up 2-0 as just 3:06
later, Abigail Hill found the back of the Spartan cage. From five
yards out, Hill's strike went into the right side of the goal,
giving the hosts a two-goal cushion.
The second half saw Wesley add one more to their total as
Pleasanton finished a penalty stroke in the 58th minute.
Her second tally of the game gave the Wolverines a 3-0 lead, which
they would hold onto for the final result.
Despite the final score, the Spartans had ample opportunity to
take the lead early in the CAC tilt. Between the 6:44 and 12:50
marks of the first half, with the game still level at 0-0, York
posted four penalty corners and registered five shots, three of
which required saves from Wolverine goalkeeper Sarah Johnson.
However, the Green and White were unable to breakthrough, as Wesley
seized control of the play and eventually the game.
For the contest, the Wolverines notched 16 shots to York's nine
while also leading in penalty corners 11-9.
Johnson secures the victory in the Wolverine goal as she made
four saves over her 70 minutes of action. Schlauch suffers the
defeat despite making seven saves for York. Spartan junior Brittany Simmons
posted a defensive save of her own in the game's 17th minute.
The Green and White will look to get back into the win column on
Thursday, September 30, to begin a four-game homestand. York opens
against McDaniel in a 4:30 pm non-conference tilt from Kinsley
Field.
