Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Kemal Nuspahic
tallied two goals and added an assist Saturday as he led the York
College men's soccer team to a commanding 3-0 Capital Athletic
Conference road triumph over St. Mary's (Md.). The victory improves
the Spartan record to 7-3 on the year including a 2-0 mark in CAC
action while the Seahawks fall to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the
conference.
The York side jumped out in front in the first half on
Nuspahic's second tally of the 2010 campaign. As the game just
spilled into the 16th minute, sophomore standout Antonio Bua sent
in a service from the right side of the pitch. St. Mary's
goalkeeper Paul Spranklin dove in an attempt to cut off the cross
but the ball came through to Nuspahic who knocked home the Green
and White's first tally of the afternoon. That score would prove to
be the eventual game-winner, Nuspahic's second such tally of the
year.
Following the halftime break, the York side looked to increase
their lead just 33 seconds in, as a strike from Bua clanged off the
Seahawks' post.
The Green and White would however, extend their advantage to 2-0
in the 61st minute. Another service from the right side
of the field proved fruitful as Nuspahic sent in the cross. Getting
on the end of the serve, senior forward Mike O'Connell
one-timed his attempt into the lower left corner. O'Connell's
second tally of the season gave the Spartans a two-goal cushion and
important breathing room.
Bua and Nuspahic would combine one more time to register York's
third goal of the CAC contest. The Spartan sophomore slipped in a
diagonal pass, once again coming from the right side of the pitch,
to Nuspahic. The all-conference and all-region forward beat a
defender and then Spranklin to touch home the third tally of his
junior campaign.
The remainder of the contest went quietly as York snagged an
important in-conference win.
For the contest, the Green and White posted a 17-3 lead in shots
while only allowing their hosts just one attempt throughout the
second 45 minutes. York also led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Spartan goalkeeper Jesse Derksen
tallies the victory as he was forced to make only one save during
his 73:23 between the pipes. Ethan Kavanagh
relieved Derksen, playing the final 16:37 to nail down the win.
Spranklin suffers the loss for the Seahawks after making a trio of
saves.
Owners of a current three-match winning streak, the York side
will look to stretch that figure to four in a row on Wednesday,
September 29. The Spartans are slated for a trip to Lynchburg for a
6:00 pm non-conference contest with the Hornets.
