SALEM, VA – The York College men's lacrosse team opened
their 2010 campaign with a humbling 22-5 loss to fourth-ranked
Roanoke College on a cold Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The
Spartans fall to 4-7 overall on opening day as they now sit at 0-1.
The Maroons are now 1-0 as they have beaten the Spartans in
York's last two season openers.
The Maroons jumped on the Spartans early and
often as they led 5-0 after the first period of play. Two of
Roanoke's goals came on special teams as they picked up a man
advantage goal and a man down goal.
Roanoke pushed the lead to 10-0 before the
Spartans got on the board courtesy of Travis Atwell
(Dunkirk, Md./Southern) goal with 5:31 left in the second
period. Josh Gamble (Easton, Md./Easton) scored
less than 40 seconds later but the Maroons scored the final goal of
the half as they took an 11-2 lead to the break.
The Maroons took away any doubt about the
final outcome in the third period as they scored the first seven
goals of the quarter to take an 18-2 lead. Four of the seven goals
were on the man advantage as the Maroon special teams were clicking
all day. Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, Md./Fallston)
stopped the bleeding with a goal with 51 seconds left in the third.
Roanoke scored the first four goals of the
fourth before the Green and White got the final two goals of the
game to provide for the final margin.
Matt Quinton and Richard Lachlan recorded five
goals to pace the Maroon offense. Trey Keeley picked up three goals
and two assists while Justin Tuma contributed three goals and one
assist.
York had five different players score goals
with McNicholas being York's lone multiple point scorer with
a goal and an assist.
Jake Dorsey earned the win in goal for Roanoke
as he made eight saves in his 56:44 of work. Dorsey allowed all
five of the Spartan goals before giving way to Kyle Hagens who
played the final 3:16 of the game.
Chris Collins (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) suffered the loss in goal as he allowed
17 goals with seven saves in 39:22 of work. Michael
Karwoski (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) played the final
20:38, allowing five goals with one save.
Roanoke held a significant advantage in every
statistical category. They outshot York 64-25, held a 44-29 edge in
ground balls, and a 21-10 margin in face-offs. York committed 36
turnovers while they went 18-of-31 in clear attempts.
The Spartans are now off until next Saturday
when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan to face the Marlins in a
non-conference contest. Face off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
