YORK, PA – The York College wrestling
team fell 20-12 to visiting King's College Saturday afternoon
in the Spartans' final home meet of the 2009-2010 campaign.
With the loss, the Green and White now stand at 8-16 for the year
while the Monarchs move to 12-8.
Despite the defeat, the young Spartans posted
several quality matches including four victories. Aaron
Repman (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led off the match with
an 8-1 victory at 125 pounds. Repman, who controlled the match from
the start, now owns a 9-6 record for the season.
At 141 pounds, freshman Chris
Gugliotti (Swoyersville, Pa./Pittston Area) nabbed
York's second triumph of the afternoon, picking up a 9-3
decision over Franklin Davis. Gugliotti's victory pushes the
Spartan rookie to a 9-10 mark, including a quality recent stretch,
that will bode well for him come the Metro Conference Championships
as well as next season.
Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar
Crest), a sophomore captain for the Spartans, picked up a
7-0 shutout decision over Jerry Robbins at 165 pounds. One of
York's more talented and potential-filled wrestlers,
Heisey's victory pulls his 2009-2010 record to .500 at 13-13.
York's fourth win of the afternoon came
from fellow sophomore captain Alex Martocello (Miller
Place, N.Y./Miller Place) at 184. In control of the match
early, a banged up Martocello pushed out to an initial lead before
the Monarchs' Frank Marinucci battled back to knot the match
at 7-7 late in the in contest. Martocello pulled out the victory
with a late escape, providing the sophomore with his
19th win of the season.
Perhaps the match's most thrilling bout
came in the 285-pound division between York's Thomas
Fitzpatrick (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) and King's Peter
Dwyer. Fitzpatrick, one of York's two seniors honored prior
to the match, scored an escape point early aginst Dwyer before the
285-pound Monarch posted a point of his own to tie the score. The
pair would trade points, pushing the final match into overtime.
Fitzpatrick and Dwyer would each have the upper hand at various
points during the bout, which stretched into four overtimes.
However, it was Dwyer at the end of the fourth extra session that
took the 7-6 victory on riding time.
That match closes out the Spartan home careers
of Fitzpatrick and 133-pound Josh Trainor (Manchester,
Md./North Carroll). The pair helped the Green and White to
a 49-44-1 mark over the last four seasons.
The York squad returns to the mat on Thursday,
January 28, as they travel to Division II Shippensburg. The
Spartans and Raiders square off in a 7:00 p.m. match.
