Stahl Secures All-American Status on Day One of NCAA Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - York College senior Josh Stahl (37-1) secured All-American status and is guaranteed a top-eight finish after posting a 2-0 record Friday on day one of the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championship hosted by the American Rivers Conference at the Alliant Energy Power House.

The No. 2 seed Spartan senior began his day with an 11-4 decision against No. 16 seed Samuel West (Central) who won a pair of preliminary round matches to earn his spot in a first round bout. Stahl posted an early takedown and later tacked on two back points to take a 5-0 lead after the first period before adding another takedown to extend his lead to 8-0 after five minutes of wrestling. After adding two more nearfall points, Stahl surrendered his first points of the match with just 34 seconds left as West scored an escape and then posted a takedown with nine seconds left. Stahl dominated the match from start to finish and was very tough on top as he racked up 5:10 in riding time.

In his second bout of the day, Stahl defeated another Midwest foe in No. 7 seed Tyler Dormanen (UW-La Crosse). After a scoreless first period, Dormanen started the second period on top and compiled 1:26 of riding time in the second period before Stahl scored a reversal for the first points of the match and took a 2-0 lead into the third period. Dormanen chose bottom to start the third to look for an early escape, but Stahl countered with a tilt for two just 13 seconds after the whistle. Stahl continued to ride tough and held Dormanen down until there was just 28 seconds left. The Spartan was hit with a second stalling call late, but successfully managed to fend off any late comeback attempts by a worn out Dormanen.

Stahl will return to the mat on Saturday in a semifinal round tilt with No. 6 seed Myles Johnson (ONU) who upset No. 3 seed Lorenzo Pellot-Vazquez (Roanoke).

This is the first All-American honor for Stahl as he is making his first appearance at nationals and is the 25th different wrestler in program history to earn NCAA All-American status. The program now has a total of 34 NCAA All-America honors to go along with four NAIA All-America accolades.

Session three of the NCAA DIII Men's Wrestling Championships will start at 11:00 a.m. (ET) on Saturday from Alliant Energy Power House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
